8.B. - Page 16 • •
q j CAMBRIDGE
,,,Hr ACADEMY
GRADE LEVELS TO BE SERVED
Transitional kindergarten was to be officially introduced in California in fall 2012. This particularly benefits
students who are age appropriate for kindergarten but who are not quite ready academically, emotionally,
or perhaps socially for the kindergarten experience. Unfortunately, due to the budget cuts in education,
many districts will no longer be offering transitional kindergarten this year. Cambridge Academy plans to
offer parents a transitional kindergarten program.
Small Schools, as defined by the Small Schools project, rarely serve more than 400 students and many serve
no more than 200. With a CUP request for 180 students, Cambridge Academy actually falls below the 200
mark.
We plan to offer seven academic grade levels (transitional kindergarten through fifth grade), using
transitional kindergarten and kindergarten as our feeders to the upper grades. A major capital investment
will be required to renovate the proposed property and properly equip the school in order to provide a high
quality facility to students and parents. Although we have no desire or intention to offer beyond fifth grade,
we are requesting CUP approval to offer transitional kindergarten through 8 grade and an enrollment of
180 students in order to offer a complete service and fully functioning elementary school as well as make
this a viable undertaking. We are requesting the additional 6 7th and 8 grades be approved within the
CUP in the event that the California Department of Education should ever decide to extend elementary
beyond fifth grade. At no time would we ever go beyond 8 grade.
The classes will be distributed as follows:
Transitional kindergarten: Two classes with up to 20 students in each class. These will be a class for
students with fall birthdays who just fall short of the cut -off age requirements and who would benefit from
an extra year to meet Cambridge Academy's kindergarten entry requirements.
Kindergarten: Two classes with an average of 20 students in each class. Kindergarten will serve as the
feeder to upper grades.
First - Fifth Grade: Only one classroom for each grade with an average of 20 students in a class.
Maximum student population will be 180 students.
OTHER PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN THE AREA
Comparable private schools in the locality have much larger enrollment than the number being requested
by Cambridge Academy. Yet, the sizes of roads around these schools appear very comparable to those in the
vicinity of Cambridge Academy. The layout of the property and the long driveway on the Cambridge
Academy site provide the distinct advantage of being able to accommodate most, if not all the traffic during
arrival and departure times, thus eliminating any backup of traffic on the roads.
Our Lady of Mt.
