8.B. - Page 20 • •
i ' CAMBRIDGE
ACADEMY
ALLEVIATING POTENTIAL CONCERNS
Although we are requesting a conditional use permit for 180 students, we will be starting off on a very small
scale and progressing to our maximum number over the course of six years.
The fact that we will be starting our school with a small number of students and that it will take us six years
to grow means that any increase in traffic will be minimal and gradual, allowing the school and our
neighbors to adapt to the change over time. Because we will be serving such a wide range of grades and
hoping to attract families in the neighborhood and members of the community to our school, we anticipate
that families will walk to school and take advantage of carpooling opportunities. We will do what we can to
encourage this practice among our school community. Additionally, we intend to implement a one -way
traffic flow system in and out of the school. Parents will enter from Connecticut Drive. There is an
exceptionally long driveway along the side of the sanctuary which will allow for plenty of room for vehicles
to stack -up, thus reducing /removing traffic from Connecticut Drive. This along with the staggered arrival and
departure times will significantly reduce the number of cars (if any) queuing on the road. Teaching staff will
be always be present during arrival and departure times to monitor and control the flow of traffic by making
sure parents quickly and safely unload /load children into cars and keep the traffic flow moving smoothly and
quickly along. Carol has much experience in this area of school traffic flow control and does not foresee this
as a problem at all. If it helps, we could ask parents to make only right turns into the school from
Connecticut and right turns out of the school onto McGarvey.
As we are a school that caters to younger children, the drivers to our school will be responsible adults. This
should greatly alleviate the fear of neighbors of fast or reckless driving in the neighborhood.
There will be three designated play /P.E. areas for the children. Children will be carefully supervised by
several teachers /staff members for all outdoor activities. Play times will also be staggered to reduce the
total number of students outside at one time, and should not cause undue concern or disturbance to
neighbors. All outdoor play will end by 5:00 p.m. (please refer to the schedule that follows).
We plan to invest a lot of time educating our parents on responsible and respectful behavior within our
school community and certainly towards our neighbors. We are confident that within a short time our
school will become not only an attractive and important feature, but also an important part of the
neighborhood.
The square footage of the church property and the layout of the grounds are able to accommodate
significantly larger numbers than Cambridge Academy is requesting. We hope that the city will take into
consideration the fact that we will carefully plan, organize, and closely oversee our arrival and departure
procedures to ensure smooth daily operations.
On the recommendation of Richard Hopper of RKH, we have adjusted our original 2 arrival and 2 departure
times to 4 arrival and 3 departure times to more evenly distribute vehicles and further reduce traffic. The
revised schedule follows later in the report (pages 10 — 12).
We would like to emphasize that the school and church will coordinate schedules so that there will never be
an overlap between the school and church functions. This will eliminate any probability of increased traffic
at any one time.
B R/ 2323 EUCLID AVENUE
UI P r» REDWOOD Cu, Y CA 94061 CONFIDENTIAL Page 6 of 12
7 7 J-> TEL: (650) 814 -8954
