TO : Parks and Recreation Commission FROM : Program Committee : Chairman Buckhout DATE : January 24 , 1977 SUBJECT : PROGRAM REVIEW The Program Committee met on January 24 , 1977 . Those present were Com- missioners Anderson and Hayes . Commissioner Buckhout was absent . In order for the new Committee members to understand the role of the Prcgram Committee , the staff reviewed the background of the Committee and the various program thrusts which have been undertaken the past few years . The new after- school program was reviewed together with the junior high noon -time program as an outreach of the Red Morton Recreation Center . The increase in teen activity and the favorable response which is being received was also discussed . The staff then presented to the Committee a proposed pilot recreation program for teens to be conducted at a junior high school . This pro - posed program is in the planning stage and input from the Committee is of great importance to the staff . The program planning is being promp- ted by the success of the current noon - time program and the desire on the part of the students , parents , and several school personnel to expand the service . The program envisions a pilot program being established at one of the junior high schools during the school year . A recreation coordinator would be hired on a full time basis with an office at the school to conduct noon -time , after- school and evening programs for the school community utilizing school facilities for scheduled special interest activities as well as drop - in programs . It was pointed out to the Committee that an agreement between the City and the School District would be worked out in order to determine sched- ules , facilities , and shared expenses . The Committee discussed the various ramifications of the program and the staff pointed out many peas and cons on the matter . It was pointed out by the staff that much discussion and planning yet remained to be accomplished before a final program prospectus was ready for presenta - tion . The Committee requested the staff to continue with the planning process . The staff then reviewed with the Committee the proposed softball program to be initiated in the spring . This program will be for youth between the ages of eight ( 8 ) and twelve ( 12 ) . The program is being initiated - 6 -
