PARKS DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
FEBRUARY 1977
The soccer season ended during the month of February with the annual
tournament being played at Kennedy School and Red Morton Community
Park on February 19 and 20 . The fields were prepared for this event
by Park Division personnel and the event was coordinated through the
Sports and Aquatics section of the Recreation Division .
Renovation work is now underway on the turf areas at Red Morton Park
and at Hawes Park as a result of the winter soccer play . The bare
areas are being regraded and reseeded to prepare the playing area
for the coming baseball season . Renovation is particularly difficult
this season due to the reduction in the use of water . Much of the water-
ing will be accomplished by hand rather than with the use of the irri -
gation system in order to reduce consumption .
The ornamental iron tree guards which were causing some damage to the
trees on Broadway were altered so as to eliminate the problem . The
curved sections at the upper end of the tree guards were damaging the
trees when the wind blew the trees against the guard . These curved
ends have now been removed and there should be no further damage .
On Sunday , February 27 , Arbor Day Ceremonies were held at the Casa de
Redwood on Veterans Boulevard . The Park Division , as traditionally ,
was involved in this ceremony and supplied the Redwood tree which was
planted in honor of Mrs . Bernice Nielson . There were approximately
200 people attending the ceremonies .
The Street Tree section crews are continuing with the systematic trim-
ming program in selected areas . The most recent area completed was on
Fernside Avenue between McGarvey Avenue and Goodwin Avenue where 51
Sycamore trees were pruned . Additionally , 71 Sycamore trees were
pruned on Iris Street as a part of the systematic program . This work
is being scheduled simultaneously with the order system when schedules
can accomodate the work loads .
The water conservation program currently being implemented by the Depart -
ment has emphasized the need for a comprehensive study to be made of the
irrigation capabilities of the various systems which have been installed
throughout the parks over the past several years . These capabilities as
related to volumes , precipitation rates , pressures , plant needs , etc . ,
will be related to plant requirements which will result in a detailed
water management program for each park area . Park Supervisor , Peter
Griffiths , has been assigned this task of preparing a water management
- 16 -
