program for all the park and recreation areas utilizing automatic irri -
gation systems . Briefly the report will cover soil and water relation -
ships , plant physiology , irrigation requirements and watering techniques .
Initially , the study will concentrate on the park and landscaped areas at
Redwood Shores where the situation is somewhat more critical and will
then be expanded to include the other park areas throughout the City .
Due to the extensiveness of the study , several weeks will be required
to complete the program . In the meantime , present water conservation
practices will continue so as to reduce water consumption as much as
possible and to remain within the guidelines established for water usage .
Briefly , present water conservation practices include the reduction of
water usage by approximately 30% ; irrigation systems have been timed for
short runs , which will reduce runoff ; a temporary moratorium has been
placed on all street tree planting and planting in park areas will be
accomplished only for replacement and repair purposes ; flower beds will
not be replanted at least for the time being ; flow constraints have
been placed in all shower heads and some hand watering has been initiated
in the park areas .
- 17 -
