Chairperson Pound welcomed the co -sponsored groups that were in the
audience to make presentations of their club ' s activities .
AGENDA ITEM 1 . Presentation by Redwood City Singles Club
Superintendent Paulson introduced Mrs . Gladys Johnson and Mrs . Ida
Moore of the Redwood City Singles Club . Mrs . Johnson gave a brief
history of the club and its activities . The club ' s function is to
provide a friendly environment that singles can trust . Mrs . Moore
indicated that many of the singles were depressed and lonely when
they joined the club and that the singles feel the club has really
changed their lives .
The club does not have any dues , but they do ask for a donation of
50tt per meeting . Bowling , bus trips , and barbecues held in the sum-
mer are some of their most successful activities .
The average attendance for 1977 has increased over the previous years '
attendance , but the club does not seem to be attracting the divorcees
and the younger people . The age level averages around 40- 50 .
( COMMISSIONER SCHLESINGER ARRIVED AT 8 : 03 P . M . )
Mr . Paulson stated that during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays ,
many singles attend the dinners that the Singles Club conducts . Mr .
Paulson thanked Mrs . Johnson & Mrs . Moore for coming .
AGENDA ITEM 2 . Presentation by TOPS Club ( Take Off Pounds Sensibly)
Mr . Paulson introduced Mrs . Evelyn Powell from the TOPS club , one of
the documented co - sponsored clubs . Mrs . Powell indicated that TOPS
is an international and non - profit organization . They have officers
and rules that they must follow or their charter will be revoked .
The object of their club is to promote health and welfare through
stimuli directed to the correction of excessive weight and mainten -
ance of the acceptable weight . The average attendance approximates
35 . Membership is 9 dollars a year which includes a monthly magazine
and a manual . Dues are kept to a minimum . The dues help to pay for
the Recognition Day , which is an event to recognize those who have
lost weight and have kept it off . Chairperson Pound asked if they
were similar to Weight Watchers . Mrs . Powell replied that they were
not ; each person goes to his/ her own doctor and get a diet personally
made for that individual . The club is there to help during the weight
loss period . The members weigh in privately each week . Mr . Weeks
asked if the club had ever presented an opportunity to the community
to become aware of the club ' s activities . Mrs . Powell replied that
the club had participated in the Red Morton Day and passed out litera -
ture about what TOPS was all about . Mrs . Powell indicated that anyone
is welcome to come and visit for a meeting . Chairperson Pound thanked
Mrs . Powell for coming .
- 2 -
