•
TO : Parks and Recreation Commission
FROM : Design and Development Committee , Chairperson Weintraub
DATE : February 7 , 1977
SUBJECT : REVIEW OF DESIGN STATUS - CANYON PARK
The Design and Development Committee met on February 7 , 1977 . Those
present were Commissioners Weintraub and Knecht . Commissioner Buckhout
was absent .
The Committee met with the staff and with Mr . Ron Hodges of the land -
scape architectural consultant firm of Singer and Hodges , who is han -
dling the design of the project . Mr . Hodges presented to the Committee
a status report on the design and explained several of the preliminary
drawings which are underway for the project . He explained the proposed
grading for the park , the location of the play apparatus area , the picnic
facilities and the access road and off street parking area . The Committee
offered several suggestions relative to these elements of the design
which will be studied for inclusion into the final plans . A model of
the play apparatus area was discussed with particular reference to its
location and compatibility with the natural terrain features of the area .
It was pointed out to the Commission that the design for Canyon Park
will employ some new irrigation techniques which will involve the drip
irrigation method together with low volume sprinkler heads in the turfed
areas . Additionally , the use of drought tolerant materials together with
native materials which are compatible for ornamental use was also dis -
cussed . It was pointed out that unless the present drought situation
was greatly alleviated by late spring , it is doubtful that the plant-
ing would be included in the first phase of development . The design ,
however , will include the planting as well as all the other features
for the first phase .
At the conclusion of the discussion , the Committee expressed their con -
currence with the construction design currently underway . It was pointed
out that the present schedule indicated that the project would be ready
for final review and calling for bids the first part of April . The
Committee agreed to additional meetings to review the plans as they
progressed .
- 7 -
