PARKS DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
MARCH 1977
The preparation of the various ball fields for the coming season was
completed in early March . This included the renovation of the turf
areas together with the sodding of badly worn areas at McGarvey Field .
Minor grading of the infields was completed and the fields are now pre-
pared for early season practice prior to league play . As a result of
the water shortage , this coming season, the infield preparation of the
ball diamonds will consist of the usual dragging , smoothing and mark-
ing , however , the sprinkling of the playing area will be confined solely
to the base areas as opposed to the entire infield area . This will be
held to an absolute minimum and will be applied just prior to games
being played . As the water situation becomes more critical , it may be
necessary to completely eliminate any sprinkling at the base areas .
Park Division personnel initiated the annual clean up and preparation
of the Easter Bowl for the Sunrise Services scheduled for April 10th .
This work includes the grading of the immediate area and the access
road , together with weed and debris removal .
The street tree section continues with their routine street tree main-
tenance . Tree planting has been discontinued ; however , orders are being
taken for tree planting and will be placed in a holding file for work to
be initiated after the drought has passed .
A close surveillance of the trees is being maintained in order to treat
any significant infestation of insects or diseases which can be compli -
cated by the drought conditions . Most experts are predicting that nor-
mal infestation can be expected to double or even triple in intensity
resultant from the stress condition as created by the drought . Every
effort will be made to control these problems as much as possible within
available resources .
-7 -
