1 <br /> PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT <br /> MAY 1977 <br /> The athletic field maintenance which involves the preparation of the <br /> fields for baseball and softball activity is now in full operation . <br /> The crews are maintaining the City field facilities together with the <br /> school facilities for Little League use . This work requires the main - <br /> tenance of these facilities seven days a week for all of the various <br /> leagues and organizations using the facility . <br /> During the month of May , the Park Division personnel were very busy <br /> with many special events which were scheduled throughout the month . <br /> These events involved the hauling and placing of bleachers , tables , <br /> chairs , platform equipment , trash containers and other necessary items <br /> for the events . The events included the Annual Art and Flower Show , <br /> Operalunches , Good Times Parade , the Pacific -8 Rowing Championship at <br /> Redwood Shores , and the Arts & Crafts Show in the downtown area . Addi - <br /> tionally , the Union Cemetery area was prepared for the Annual Memorial <br /> Day Ceremonies which are held each year at the cemetery . <br /> In - service training continues for both the Supervisors and the mainten - <br /> ance personnel . Tree crew personnel , Percy Handley , James Littlefield , <br /> and Park Supervisor Peter Griffiths , attended the California Parks & <br /> Recreation Society ' s Park Operations Spring Workshop held on May 10 , <br /> 1977 , in Burlingame , California . The program included such topics as <br /> the use of re-claimed water on ornamental plants , post emergence turf <br /> grass weed control , effect of drought on trees and a discussion of <br /> current problems facing landscape vegetation . <br /> Park Superintendent Pasco Balzarini has served on the Horticultural <br /> Advisory Committee for the College of San Mateo for several years and <br /> was recently elected Chairman of that Committee for the year 1977 - 78 . <br /> Very good progress is being made with respect to the Water Management <br /> Study that is underway in the Department . The final draft of the initial <br /> phase of this study is now being prepared . Several water conservation <br /> methods and techniques , many of which were suggested by our field per- <br /> sonnel , have been initiated in an effort to reduce our use of water . <br /> Experimentation in the Redwood Shores area will be used as a basis for <br /> initiating various practices throughout the park system . <br /> Upon analyzing the consumption readouts for the period of March and <br /> April in comparison with usage for the same period in 1976 , the follow- <br /> ing was found : <br /> 1976 Actual Use : 12 , 024 units <br /> 1977 Actual Use : 3 , 933 units <br /> Reduction 8 , 091 or 67 . 3 % <br /> - 9 - <br />
