1 PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT MAY 1977 The athletic field maintenance which involves the preparation of the fields for baseball and softball activity is now in full operation . The crews are maintaining the City field facilities together with the school facilities for Little League use . This work requires the main - tenance of these facilities seven days a week for all of the various leagues and organizations using the facility . During the month of May , the Park Division personnel were very busy with many special events which were scheduled throughout the month . These events involved the hauling and placing of bleachers , tables , chairs , platform equipment , trash containers and other necessary items for the events . The events included the Annual Art and Flower Show , Operalunches , Good Times Parade , the Pacific -8 Rowing Championship at Redwood Shores , and the Arts & Crafts Show in the downtown area . Addi - tionally , the Union Cemetery area was prepared for the Annual Memorial Day Ceremonies which are held each year at the cemetery . In - service training continues for both the Supervisors and the mainten - ance personnel . Tree crew personnel , Percy Handley , James Littlefield , and Park Supervisor Peter Griffiths , attended the California Parks & Recreation Society ' s Park Operations Spring Workshop held on May 10 , 1977 , in Burlingame , California . The program included such topics as the use of re-claimed water on ornamental plants , post emergence turf grass weed control , effect of drought on trees and a discussion of current problems facing landscape vegetation . Park Superintendent Pasco Balzarini has served on the Horticultural Advisory Committee for the College of San Mateo for several years and was recently elected Chairman of that Committee for the year 1977 - 78 . Very good progress is being made with respect to the Water Management Study that is underway in the Department . The final draft of the initial phase of this study is now being prepared . Several water conservation methods and techniques , many of which were suggested by our field per- sonnel , have been initiated in an effort to reduce our use of water . Experimentation in the Redwood Shores area will be used as a basis for initiating various practices throughout the park system . Upon analyzing the consumption readouts for the period of March and April in comparison with usage for the same period in 1976 , the follow- ing was found : 1976 Actual Use : 12 , 024 units 1977 Actual Use : 3 , 933 units Reduction 8 , 091 or 67 . 3 % - 9 -
