Hoover , Kennedy and McKinley students participated in the First Annual
Teen Variety Show held at McKinley School . There were sixteen different
acts including singing , skits , pantomime and band exhibits . Over 400
spectators enjoyed the show which was made possible through the coopera -
tion and support of the school ' s facility and administration .
The Bay Area Teen Staff had its second teen workshop in Oakland . Rec -
reation leaders felt the workshop was very productive . Many partici -
pants returned with new ideas and a more positive outlook in working
with teens .
On May 23 , sixteen ( 16 ) volunteers were trained in the procedures and
policies of the Parks & Recreation Department . The teens were also
shown how to answer phones , take messages , do publicity and work with
the public . The volunteer program is a big part of the Red Morton
Center and attempts are being made to expand the program to include
service projects for other areas .
This is the last month for structured recreation nights at the Center
and Hoover School . Thousands of teens have participated and enjoyed
being with recreation leaders and friends . Recreation nights have
proven that teens enjoy being with their own peer group . There will
be recreation nights during the summer but not always structured .
Noon -time programs were closed this month . Noon - time activities helped
teens to identify with the Recreation Center . Leaders are now in the
process of helping with graduation parties .
- 13 -
