PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
JULY 1977
Work is nearly completed on the field data and research for the Water
Management Program , which is being prepared for use in the various
park areas . Working with several of the Gardener/Caretakers of the
various park areas , CETA employee Theresa Justice has compiled the
necessary irrigation system and flow data to be utilized in organizing
the initial program for use by field personnel . Yet to be completed
is an analysis by area , utilizing the field data and the computerized
programs to establish an irrigation schedule . This irrigation schedule
would include time allocations , flow data , and application rates for
specific areas . The Park Maintenance crews continue to conserve water
as a part of their Grounds Maintenance work . Consumption reports for
the period of June and July indicate that the Department has reduced
water consumption by 61 . 7% for the same period of last year . Some
irrigation rates are being increased in key high use areas in an
attempt to prevent the complete loss of the turf areas . Additionally ,
it has been found that the drought is having a significant adverse
effect on several of the mature redwood trees and , therefore , special
attention is being given these trees with respect to deep watering and
more frequent application by special means other than through normal
irrigation .
Park crews continue with their aerification of turf areas which will
assure a maximum utilization of water that is supplied under drought
constraints . It is felt that the months of August and September will
be the critical period with respect to plant material loss due to
drought conditions and irrigation constraints .
The Building and Facility Maintenance personnel in the Division together
with the assistance from two private contractors have completed all the
necessary renovation work at Hoover and Community Pools for the summer ' s
recreational swimming program . This renovation included the fabrication
of new doors for the basket and guard rooms , replacement of door glass
with safety plate glass , installation of new flushometers to conserve
water , replacement and repainting of all safety signing in the interior
of the buildings and the pools . During the month a break in the circu-
lating line in the deep end of Community Pool necessitated closing the
pool for one day while crews removed a section of the concrete decking
to repair the line and repour the decking over the line .
During the month of July , the Park Division crews assisting in the 4th
of July Independence Day Parade by distributed bleachers and the necessary
tables and chairs for the event .
- 9 -
