PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
NOVEMBER 1977
Grounds Maintenance crews continue with the renovation of several turf
areas resultant from the drought conditions . This renovation prepares
these areas for expected winter rains which it is hoped will provide a
strong and vigorous turf with which to enter the expected drought con -
ditions of next year . Several changes in the irrigation systems has
become necessary in order to better adapt the irrigation system to the
reduced water allocations . Better coverage with less gallonage of
water used is an objective of this alteration .
The water consumption data for the period of October/ November indicate
that the total allocation for the park system was 11 , 584 units with
total consumption of 10 , 311 units . This resulted in a savings of
1 , 273 units below the allocation .
Vandalism at the restroom facilities at Marlin Park and on Marine
World Parkway in Redwood Shores again necessitated the repair work
of the Building Maintenance crew . There was an attempt to set fire
to the restroom at Marlin Park and several of the partitions were
damaged at the restroom on Marine World Parkway . Additionally , the
Building Maintenance crew initiated the maintenance and repair work
at the Hoover Swimming Pool in preparation for next season . This
involved the removal , repair and reinstallation of the water pumps
at the pool .
The Street Tree crews found it necessary to defer some of the normal
work requests in order to handle the emergency calls and priority
work resulting from the windstorm on the evening of November 21 .
There were 48 separate instances of priority storm damage reported
during a four-day period . Additionally , the crews worked in coopera -
tion with the Department of Public Works ' Street Re- surfacing Project
and completed block pruning in advance of and in preparation for the
re- surfacing project .
A training session dealing with the safe use of and laws pertaining to
the use and storage of hazardous pesticides and other agricultural
chemicals was conducted at the Municipal Service Center for most of
the Park Division employees . Park Foreman Hernandez with the assis -
tance of John Smith , the instructor for the Commercial Applicator ' s
Pesticide License conducted the workshop . At the end of the course ,
the participants were given an examination in order to test their
knowledge of the subject . This was followed by a discussion of the
questions and answers as well as the various points which were covered
during the instruction period .
-7 -
