PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
DECEMBER 1977
The conclusion of the pro-football season in December has enabled the
Park Maintenance crews to initiate the removal of the portable fencing
around the 49er Field . The canvas and burlap screening is removed and
those portions which are usable for next season are prepared for storage
and are placed in the warehouse for maximum protection . Field renovation
will be underway as soon as the soil conditions will permit . Schedules
are being discussed with the 49er Organization so that public use of the
field facilities can be maximized until the 1978 football season is under-
way .
The impact of the drought conditions over the past few seasons is now
being manifested in a few areas resulting in unusually heavy infestations
of insects in some species of trees and shrubs . The Red Morton Park and
the Redwood Shores area are two locations which problems have become
apparent . In Redwood Shores several of the Ceanothus shrubs are heavily
infested with the Western Sycamore Borer which the Department of Agri -
culture indicates is very rare for this part of California . Additional
information concerning this infestation is being supplied the Department
of Agriculture for their further investigation . At Red Morton Park heavy
infestations of the Poplar and Willow Borer have been found attacking the
Willow trees . In some cases , the trees have been damaged to the point
where removal will be necessary . This insect is also very unusual for
this area . These insects are extremely difficult to eradicate in that
the adult stage must be controlled during the interval between March
and June . A concentrated effort will be made to eradicate the pests
during this period . It is anticipated that other infestations of
insects not commonly seen will result from the continuing drought con-
ditions . Close contact is being kept with the Department of Agricul -
ture as well as other agencies relative to the insect problem . Addi -
tionally , close coordination is being maintained with the State
Department of Food and Agriculture relative to their program of identi -
fying and treating the Dutch Elm Disease throughout San Mateo County .
On December 6 , an informational meeting was held at the Municipal
Services Center concerning this disease in which Park Division personnel
participated . Every effort will be made to cooperate in the state-wide
effort to indentify infected trees and control the disease .
During the month , the Facility Maintenance crew completed the installa-
tion of new trash container units in most of the park areas . Addition-
ally the crew has been involved in several emergency repairs of sprinkler
lines which have been damaged by vehicle accidents on the parkways and
islands . The renovation of the pumps at Community Pool and Hoover Pool
and the filter system at Community Pool was completed in readiness for
- 5 -
