RECREATION DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT <br /> CENTER OPERATIONS & SPECIAL INTEREST CLASSES <br /> The Annual Volunteer Recognition Night was held at the Community Activi - <br /> ties Building on September 15 , with approximately 150 people attending . <br /> The Red Morton Center staff presented a slide show depicting numerous <br /> volunteers in assorted jobs followed by the presentation of certificates <br /> to all the volunteers . Cake and coffee and punch were served . <br /> A second Operalunch series began downtwon on September 16 , and will be <br /> held every Friday for four Fridays . The Downtown Merchants Association <br /> is co-sponsoring the program along with the Department , the Civic Cultural <br /> Commission and the San Mateo County Arts Council . <br /> Another successful Sequoia Gem and Mineral Show was held at the Red Morton <br /> Center on September 17 and 18 , with dealers and audience coming from <br /> throughout California . <br /> Special interest class registrations began on September 6 , and most of <br /> the classes began after September 19 . To date only one class has been <br /> cancelled due to lack of registrations . New classes scheduled this <br /> fall include a bicycle maintenance course , bridge lessons , a grooming <br /> course , several craft classes for teens , Yoga for Seniors , and square <br /> dancing . <br /> Red Morton Center <br /> The first Junior High Dance was September 23 , from 7 : 30 p . m . to 10 : 30 p . m . <br /> Disco music was provided by Steve Rood from KFRC radio station . The dance <br /> was a sell out with over 300 students attending and over 100 turned away <br /> at the door due to a full house . Tickets are sold at the schools and <br /> hopefully more teens will buy their tickets at school so as to guarantee <br /> them entrance to the dance . <br /> Structured Recreation Nights have started at Hoover Junior High and the <br /> Red Morton Center . The first nights have attracted over 100 teens . <br /> Future activities include movies , anything -goes games , roller night <br /> plus the open game room and gym . <br /> Veterans Memorial Building <br /> The 20th Annual Fun After Fifty Bazaar is being held on October 17th , <br /> from 10 a . m . to 8 p . m . and October 18th , from 10 a . m . to 4 p . m . at the <br /> Vets Building . Many handmade items will be on sale to the general pub- <br /> lic . Proceeds from this event go towards Senior Citizen Projects in <br /> Redwood City . <br /> -8- <br />
