PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
SEPTEMBER 1977
Leaving the Department this month is Peter H . Griffiths , Park Supervisor ,
who has resigned effective September 30 , 1977 , to accept a position as
Manager of Grounds and Maintenance Operation with the City of Mountain
View . Mr . Griffiths has been with the City for approximately 4 years
and has made a significant contribution to the success of the Depart-
mental operations not only on a day- to- day basis , but also with respect
to special assignments such as the Street Tree Study , Safety Program ,
Water Management Plan , Equipment Specifications , etc . Mr . Griffiths
is to be congratulated on his successful appointment to the managerial
position with the City of Mountain View .
The Street Tree Section crews are now to full strength for the first
time in five months . Mr . Joel Zamarippa was recently appointed as
Equipment Operator in the Section which completed the filling of the
existing vacancy . The crews have greatly reduced the backlog of tree
trimming requests in the Department ' s files . Additionally , the section
has completed block pruning operations on the 1700 block of Kansas Street
which involved major restructuring of 16 large Modesto Ash trees in the
area . Drought related problems continue to generate a major part of the
work load and this has also necessitated continued supplemental deep water-
ing of some of the large trees on park grounds and other landscaped City
areas .
The Street Tree Section personnel attended a training session presented
by Pacific Gas and Electric Company on September 28 at the Municipal
Service Center dealing with working around live electrical wires and
responding to emergency situations involving downed high--voltage lines .
The Island and Circles crew continue with their normal operations together
with the renovation of several of the lawn areas which were . in severe
drought stress in the Woodside Road median strip . The crew is being
assisted in this work by utilizing CETA personnel .
Flag Football season will be underway in early October and games will
be played at all elementary schools . This activity together with the
soccer season currently underway and the winter softball leagues , have
placed heavy demands on the maintenance crews for the marking and field
preparation for these activities .
In that the Chamber of Commerce building is an intricate part of the Civic
Center , the Chamber requested the City to assist in the landscape mainten-
ance of their facility . An agreement was executed with the Chamber for
this service which will reimburse the City for the labor and materials
necessary to provide an acceptable appearance for their facility . The
maintenance crews initiated their work at the Chamber building the 1st
of September . Complete lawn renovation is currently underway .
- 6 -
