_ `rr
PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
FEBRUARY 1978
The soccer season ended during the month of February with the annual
tournament being played at Red Morton Community Park on February 18,
19, and 20. The fields were prepared for this event by Park Division
personnel and the event was coordinated through the Sports & Aquatics
Section of the Recreation Division.
Park Division personnel continue with the normal grounds and facility
maintenance activities during the month of February. Additionally,
several special projects were undertaken and completed. Special
assignments included: the installation of a new irrigation system at
City Hall ; the removal of the portable fencing around the 49er Field;
the removal of the soccer goal posts at Community Park; and the instal-
lation of new soccer goals at Hoover School .
The tree trimming crews were kept busy during the rain and windstorms
which struck Redwood City during the early part of February. During
the period of the storms, the crews responded to numerous requests for
tree removals, tree staking, and fallen branch and debris removal .
Crews have also completed major block pruning assignments on Alameda
de las Pulgas, Washington Avenue, and Palm Avenue, in addition to an
area-wide pruning project in the southeast section of Marlin Subdivision
#2 in Redwood Shores. Two members of the Redwood Shores Resident Crew
are assisting Forestry Division personnel in trirrning all of the trees
in this area. The project will take approximately three weeks to com-
plete and will not affect the routine work load of the Forestry Division.
The Islands and Circles crew continue the normal winter maintenance schedule
in park areas throughout the City, and, additionally, have assisted the
Forestry Section with several emergency problems that developed in the
downtown landscaping during the month's violent windstorms.
In-service training continues for both the Park Supervisor and mainten-
ance personnel . On February 8, Park Supervisor Hernandez, Park Leader
Kitajima, and Gardener/Caretaker Ortisi attended a one-day Environmental
Horticulture Seminar sponsored by the University of California Cooperative
Extension and held in Oakland. Topics included the effects and potential
benefits of the recent California drought and the availability and selec-
tion of trees and other plant materials. On February 15, Building Main-
tenance personnel made an educational tour of several parks, swimning pools,
and recreational installations in Santa Clara County. The program offered
an opportunity to examine some of the methods and products used by other
cities in playground design and installation, landscaping, and mechanical
assembly. Personnel in attendance were Senior Park Craftworkers Touye and
Weston and Building Maintenance Workers Heinkel and Fulcher.
-5-
