Discussion - Competition Policy <br /> .. �- <br /> Mr. Weeks indicated this agenda item reswlted from a Jetter from £ali- <br /> fornia Park & Recreation Society (CPRS) with their cpncern over compe- � <br /> tition in youth $ports. A Competition Committee was developed by CPRS <br /> in order to inform people of the situation and to propose solutions � � <br /> to the problem. A copy of the letter along with the goal statemen�s <br /> of the Committee were included in the Commission's packets. <br /> Mr. Weeks indicated a meeting with the Commission's Policy Committee <br /> and the Recrea��on staff was held to discuss their thoughts in the <br /> area of competitjon, the role that the Commission and the Department <br /> can play, ar�d ta at�tempt to clear1y define sports and competition. <br /> The Committee felt that the Commission should be fully involved in : <br /> study and should try to develop an exceptable policy statement and <br /> � arrive at objectives to impiement the policy. They felt the Camnis- <br /> sion shauld begin by having work sessions to discuss th�e issue and all <br /> of the ramifications qf the issue. <br /> Commissioner Weintraub felt it would be essential to receive public <br /> par�icipation in the discussions. She also .felt that it is a worth- <br /> while s�udy. Mr. Weeks reviewed the objectives for implementing the <br /> study that were suggested by the CPRS Competition Committee. He indi- <br /> cated canmunity invo1vement was one of the main objectives. He suggested <br /> the adaption of these objective� to implement the study. <br /> Commissioner Pound suggested that some of the objectives be assigr�ed <br /> to committeeS in order to get background work done on the objective. <br /> It was determined that this could. be done at a 'fater date as the study <br /> developed. <br /> Mr. Week$ reviewed the list. of reference ma�erial along with possible <br /> speakers ava�]able on the subject. Corr�nissioner Pound suggested that <br /> the s�aff determine which ref�rence materials were avai]abJe for their <br /> use at the Toca1 li�rary. This will be done. <br /> MOTION: Com�nissioner Pound moved, seconded by Commissioner . <br /> . Knecht, to implement the study on competition in <br /> youth sports. It was determined to have the f�rst <br /> work session on Apri1 l2, 1978, at 4:00 p.m. , <br /> prior to the Commission meeting. The motion pdssed <br /> unanimously by voice vote. <br /> P1r. Weeks indicated that the Commission, upon completing the study, will <br /> ' � arriv� at polic� statements for use in the future with all recreation <br /> activ�ties. These policies will then be incorporated into the recreation <br /> programs. <br /> �2_ <br />
