Those present
were Correnissioners Schlesinger and Anderson. Commissioner Hayes was
absent. .
The Comnittee met to initiate a review and discussion of the various ,
operational problems involving the street tree function of the Depart-
ment. Mr. Weeks pointed out to the Committee that a thorough review
of the various policies was needed in order to assist in upgrading
the operation and to provide for future program planning for the
Department. It was pointed out that as a part of the review, the
various existing ordinances relating to the street tree operation
should be discussed and perhaps changed in order to be more perti-
nent to today's conditions. Additionally, it was pointed out to the
Committee that efforts should be made to involve the Comnission to
a greater extent in the street tree operational policies and appeal
processes.
The Committee initiated their discussion by reviewing some of the
existing policies in general . It was agreed that each individual
phase of the operation would be more thoroughly discussed together
with the policies that govern that operation. The objective of
the Comnittee would be to arrive at various policy statements which
would more clearly define the operation and then submit these recom-
mendations to the Corimission for full discussion. The policies would
then be prepared for recommendation to the City Council to be adopted
for long-range guidance for the program.
It was agreed that a major effort would be made to thoroughly publi-
cize the program and the adopted policies so as to inform the citizenry
as thoroughly as possible. The Cortnittee agreed that several meetings
were going to be necessary over the next few months to complete these
discussions.
-2-
