The
Islands and Circles crew was reduced by 50% with only one Gardener/
Caretaker remaining and supplemented with a seasonal laborer. The
Gardener/Caretaker was reassigned the the Redwood Shores area in order
to assist with their added burden. Additionally, a seasonal laborer
is being used to handle the baseball diamond preparation for the balance
of the sumner season.
Recruiting is underway to fill the vacancy of the Park Supervisor posi-
tion and the Tree Trimner position, both of which were approved in the
Adopted Budget.
The Facility Maintenance crew spent a considerable amount of time at
the Fair Oaks Comnunity Center repairing vandalism damage on the irri-
gation system. During the month of July, 18 gear-driven rotary-type
sprinkler heads were damaged beyond repair. When added to the total
of 16 heads which were destroyed in June, this brings the loss to a
total of 34 heads in a two month period. The heads cost approximately
$20 a piece, which results in an expenditure of approximately $680 for
equipment for the Center to keep the irrigation system in an operating
condition. As a matter of interest, during the period between September
1977 and June 1978, an additional 31 heads were damaged; thus a grand
total of 65 heads have been replaced since September of 1977.
The Grounds Maintenance crews were involved with a weed spraying program
during the month in an effort to gain greater control over the unusually
prolific weed growth this season. Some reseeding has also taken place
in selected areas.
Although somewhat hampered by an incomplete work force and personnel
absences due to vacation schedules, the Street Tree Section has kept
current with the majority of the trimning and removal requests while
moving into the long delayed residential planting pragram. Additionally,
the crews have responded to several emergency call-back situations at
the request of the Fire Department and have completed the annual pruning
of all of the street and park trees in the downtown landscaping. Heavy
infestations of aphids have caused a large volumne of spray requests for
the Department. Every effort is being made to respond to these requests
comnensurate with the resources available to do so.
-6-
