t 4
 /'

T0: Parks & Recreation Commission
FROM: Community & Commission Relations Committee
DATE: November 29, 1978
SUBJECT: STATUS REPORT - JOINT PARK & RECREATION COMMISSION AJD CIVIC
CULTURAL COMMISSION C0'IMITTEE
The joint committee of the Parks & Recreation Commission and the Civic
Cultural Commission met November 29, 1978. Those Commissioners present
were Commissioners Knecht, Hayes and Weintraub (Weintraub was sitting
in for Schlesinger) and Commissioners Mears, Kennedy and Swope.
The joint committee net to initiate their discussions relevant to the
possibility of combining the Parks & Recreation Commission and the Civic
Cultural Commission into one body. The staff reviewed the backgrounds
of both comnissions ,nd pointed out the various responsibilities which
the City Council had vested in both comnissions. There was some dis-
cussion relative to the origin of the commissions and the various dif-
ferences in operatioiaal responsibilities of each. It was the consensus
of the Committee that they should attemot to thoroughly review the obli-
gations which both Commissions have to the community and attempt to
arrive at their best recommendation with respect to how these responsi-
bilities can best be met.
Some pros and cons were discussed which helped to delineate the advan-
tages and disadvantages which would be more thoroughly reviewed in
future meetings. The Corrnittee decided to invite representatives
from two or three other cities that are currently operating on a com-
bined basis in order to receive first hand information from this type
of operation. It was agreed that several meetings would be held in
order that the subject might be thoroughly reviewed and that the next
meeting would be after the first of the year. The staff will arrange
for the representatives from the other cities to be present at this
meetinq or at successive meetings, which ever is mutually convenient.
The Committee representatives from both commissions urged the comnis-
sions to submit as much input as possible to the joint committee so
that all considerations will be discussed.
-7-
