PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
DECEMBER 1978
The resident crew at Red Morton Park with the assistance of the Division's
Equipment Operator, completed the lawn renovation work in the turf areas
along Madison Avenue adjacent to the Veterans Memorial Building and the
Corimunity Swimming Pool . Utilizing the new tractor mounted thatching
attachment, the crew was able to reduce the time necessary for this task
from 8 working days to 3-1/2 working days. This is a rather striking
example of how mechanization can reduce the labor involved in some of
the maintenance tasks. Other areas in which renovation was also com-
pleted involved the Municipal Services Center, Stafford Park, and Dove
Beeger Park.
The maintenance crews have now removed the portable fencing at the 49er
Field. Several fence panels are used to fence around the 49er Building
and are also used as a portion of the outfield fence at Bechet Field.
This fencing also provides some measure of protection for the rose garden.
This work is being accomplished in preparation for the coming softball
season. The balance of the portable fencing is stored at the Municipal
Service Center and the screening for the fencing is stored at the Pool
Warehouse. The costs for the removal of the portable fencing is charged
to the 49er organization.
Resultant from good weather conditions the first part of the month, the
crews were able to initiate the chemical weed control program directed
toward the winter weed crop. The rainfall in November, followed by favorable
weather the first part of December, resulted in considerable germination
of the winter weeds. Spraying of the weeds in the seedling stage assures
excellent results.
The new Park Supervisor, Mr. Jack Fowlkes, started his work with the
Department December 18, 1978. His main responsibilities will involve
the Street Tree Program, the Building & Facilities Maintenance activi-
ties, the Grounds Maintenance of the Islands, Medians & Circles, as well
as a few of the park areas.
The Street Tree crew during the month of December, completed the block
pruning of the 100 through 600 and the 1000 of James Avenue. This work
involves the dormant pruning of sycamores which will be continued through-
out the City this time of the year. Additionally, the crew has been able
to handle the normal work requests where warranted. Recruitment is still
underway for a Tree Trirner to fill an existing vacancy. It is anticipated
that the crew will be up to full strength by the middle of January.
