Commissioner Rollins inquired as to the status of `the portable fencing of
the 49er Field. Mr. Weeks indicated that the 49er's had awarded the construction
contract and that the fence panels were now being manufactured. He further
indicated that Park Division personnel would remove the existing fence and
prepare the area for the placement of the post sleeves for the portable fence.
This would be done under contract at 49er expense. Mr. Weeks reminded the
Commission that the two sections of fence that would be removed are at the
west and south side of the field. The fence adjacent to Myrtle Street would
not be removed at this time but would be replaced in the future construction
program of the Myrtle Street parking area.
Commissioner Weintraub wished to know if any of the persons who had attended
the neighborhood meetings regarding the Hetch Hetchy Right-of-Way were people
who participated in the Commission's Right-of-way Survey in 1973. Mr. Weeks
replied that while we could not say for sure it was quite likely that some survey
participants had attended the meeting.
tr. Weeks further stated that subsequent meetings with Singer & Hodges had
resulted in an incorporation into the plan of the pertinent suggestions which e
had been presented at the neighborhood meetings. It was mentioned that in
reviewing notes of the neighborhood meetings there were very few suggestions
with respect to the design concept of the plan. Most of the comnents dealt
with how the development would personally affect the homeowners living adjacent
to the right-of-way. Mr. 4Jeeks indicated that the consultants would speak to
these particular concerns in their final report.
Recreation Superintendent Paulson briefed the Commission on a presentation that
Division personnel had been presenting to local teacher-parent organizations.
The purpose of these presentations was to explain the changes in the after-
school recreation program, to seek some input as to the success of the current
sports program, to discuss some concepts which might be implemented into the
development of spring activities and to receive feedback as to where the community
felt major recreation program thrusts should be.
Mr. Paulson indicated that presentations had already been made to six school
organizations and that staff had received some general and technical input which
would certainly assist them in future planning. He further indicated that
response to the after-school sports program has been generally favorable. Most
parents liked it because it was more organized than previous programs and
communication had become better because activities had been limited to a schedule. g
Mr. Paulson mentioned that there were strong requests for major thrusts in
the sports area, especially in so-called lifetime sports.
In response to a question by Commissioner Schlesinger, Mr. Paulson stated
that participation in the after-school sports program had been quite good.
At some schools as high as 25% of the student body had participated. He
suggested that differences in school participation were the result of numerous -
-3-
