PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
FEBRUARY 1976
Foremen : Luis Hernandez
Peter Griffiths
Park maintenance crews initiated the ball diamond preparation work which
is necessary to prepare for the coming baseball season . Work was completed
on the Kiwanis , Mitchell and Bechet and Griffin Fields . This includes the
adding of topsoil , re-grading of the infield area , dragging and smoothing
of the area in preparation for play . This work will continue at the other
diamonds during the month of March .
All the new turf areas at Red Morton Community Park received a thorough
aerification in preparation for the Spring fertilization program . In
addition , some of the more compacted areas will be top-dressed with a
special material which will assist in combatting the compaction as well as
provide for a vigorous turf growth in the early Spring .
Several of the islands and circles are also receiving turf renovation
treatments . One example is the circle at Hopkins and Duane . This area was
thoroughly verti -cut in order to remove all the thatch , so that top-dressing
and re- seeding could be accomplished .
The turf renovation of the outfield at Hawes Park Baseball Diamond was
completed , and there has been excellent germination of the new seeding .
Weather permitting , the first mowing of the newly seeded areas will take place
around the second week of March . Every effort is being made to restore the
heavily damaged turf areas resultant from heavy use during the year so that
the field will be in excellent playing condition for the start of the baseball
season .
The forestry crews over the past several months have been experimenting
with various pruning projects in order to assist in arriving at future guide -
lines for a systematic trimming program . The most recent project was on
James Street , which was completed early in February . This project was designed
to test the effectiveness of a systematic pruning program together with the
comparative cost of accomplishing the work by contract . The results of the
project show a dramatic increase in productivity and a reduction in the
cost of pruning when compared to the present work order system . Forestry sec -
tion personnel were able to complete the experimental project with a savings of
71 -80% over contractual bids from local tree services . Additional systematic
pruning programs will be scheduled which , it is hoped , will eventually replace
the order system .
