The facility maintenance crew completed the disassembly , renovation , and
re-piping of the circulation system at Hoover Pool . This system has been
particularly troublesome in the past and has required considerable mainten-
ance resultant from leakage and breaks in the piping . The decision was made
to replace as much of the galvanized systems with PVC ( plastic pipe ) to help
eliminate the continual maintenance caused by corrosion both inside and out -
side the galvanized system .
The vandalizing of departmental sprinkler systems continues to be a major
problem which requires constant maintenance and repair . For example , during
the period of August 19 , 1975 until January 16 , 1976 there were a total of
185 sprinkler heads and risers which were either broken or stolen as a result
of vandalism . The problem is particularly severe in the Redwood Shores area ,
where some 83 heads were involved , and in the downtown area , where 46 heads
were involved . Red Morton Community Park is also receiving a high degree of
vandalism with 22 heads damaged during this period . Every effort is being
made to devise ways and means to reduce this damage . However , only minor
success has been experienced thus far .
Commensurate with the Department ' s efforts to maximize training as much as
possible , Clifford Rifbjerg , Senior Park Craft Worker , Carold Heinkel , Build -
ing Maintenance Man I , and Mike Payne , Gardener , attended a one-day seminar on
the installation , repair and maintenance of automatic sprinkler systems
sponsored by the Rainbird Irrigation Supply Company .
