Mr . Weeks wished to mention a couple of points which were raised at the Council
Meeting . He stated that both the Councilmen and Commission on many occasions
had expressed concern about the degree to which Redwood City could provide
facilities , leadership , supervision , and maintenance for use of facilities by
non - residents . He went on to state that this is not to say that the soccer
organizations consist totally of non - residents . He felt the East Redwood City
area is an area of particular difficulty because of the lack of facilities and
because it serves basically county areas . He reminded the Commission that on
several occasions they had studied the possibility of facilities in this area ,
but met with the problem of limited funds and limited jurisdiction . He suggested
that the problem of jurisdiction needed to be resolved in the future , and that
the county and neighboring communities which are involved in East Redwood City
must recognize their responsibilities there .
Commissioner Weintraub suggested that perhaps a Commission committee could
meet with the San Mateo County Parks and Recreation Commission to discuss
concerns with respect to the sharing of this responsibility . She further sug -
gested that the Santa Clara elementary school site might be an area which could
be utilized in the future .
Mr . Weeks indicated that in all probability the Santa Clara site would be sold
for development in the near future , and not available for recreation use .
Mr . Weeks stated that he had attended a meeting of the San Mateo County Planning
Group , who are currently studying the entire county -wide problem of open space ,
lack of facilities , etc . One of the things that was pointed out to this group
is that the county must face up to the fact that they are in the urban recrea -
tion business . They can not continue to concern themselves only with large
recreation and regional facilities , but must share the burden of providing serv -
ices to communities in these urban county areas . Mr . Weeks indicated that this
is one of the issues that the county group would be studying .
Discussion ensued as to whether Mr . Bustos had requested night - lighted facilities
from either the cities of San Carlos or Menlo Park , the Sequoia Union High School
District or from the County Parks and Recreation Department . Mr . Bustos stated
that attempts have been made to secure facilites from Sequoia High School ,
but that maintenance schedules prevented the use of these fields at this time .
He further stated that a majority of the people in his group are from the Willow
area of Redwood City and that available facilities which are a great distance
from that area would not be as suitable .
Mr . Bustos indicated that he personally would be willing to serve on any committee
which would include city and county officials in an attempt to remedy this
problem .
The question of the long soccer season was again raised for discussion and
it was suggested that the Hidalgo schedule be adjusted to conform more closely
with other seasonal sports . Mr . Bustos indicated that it would be extremely
difficult to change the season , as the schedules are set by the Peninsula Soccer
- 3 -
