PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
MARCH 1976
The Parks ' grounds maintenance crews during the month of March were engaged in
intensive chemical weed control programs both for preemergence and postemergence
weeds . The turf areas , as well as the shrub bed areas are chemically treated
with herbicide materials in order to reduce the weed infestation in these
areas . Only herbicide materials which are licensed by the State and are
declared to be safe for public use , are applied in the park areas . This
chemical weed control program greatly reduces the labor that is necessary for
hand -weeding and mechanical weeding , and therefore , reduces the cost of the
overall weed control program . The herbicide materials are compatible with
the turf and shrub areas , and therefore , no loss of desirable plant material
is experienced .
In addition to their normal maintenance routine , the Redwood Shores crew
also completed the spring pruning and trimming program for the shrubs and
small trees throughout the park areas and parkways . Approximately 478 plants
were prepared for the forthcoming growing season .
An experiment is being conducted at Red Morton Community Park by the park
maintenance crew in order to ascertain for future use the best technique to
improve soil conditioning so as to maximize the absorptive and retention
capacity of the soil for water and nutrients to allow for vigorous turf
growth . This experiment is part of the Department ' s program of improved turf
management throughout the park areas , which will result in greater wear resist -
ance resultant from heavy use . The experiment involves the use of aerification
followed by top dressing with especially prepared mulch materials as soil
conditioners which will improve the moisture retention , air supply , and
nutrient absorption by the root system of the turf .
Park Division crews during the month of March assisted with the multi -
cultural festivities and Open House at the Fair Oaks Community Center . The
crews provided chairs , staging , barricades and other items for the event .
Work was initiated on the renovation and installation of a new automatic
sprinkler system at the Laurie Duncan Park areas . In addition to the new
sprinkler system a permanent picnic table and drinking fountain will be
installed , as well as new landscape mounting and selected plantings of
shade trees . This project is one of the Capital Improvement Projects
involving the improvement of street islands , medians , and circles throughout
the City . This work is accomplished by Park Division personnel .
The Veterans Boulevard cul -de- sac and the Main -Beech Street Park area will
receive an installation of battery-operated control valves and clocks for
an automatic irrigation system to be completed by mid-April . This will
-8-
