PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
JULY 1976
The grounds maintenance crews in the Park Division were heavily engaged
in summer weed control during the month of July . All the turf areas
in the various parks were treated for broadleaf weed control with a
2 -4D base herbicide . The elimination of broadleaf weeds in the turf
greatly assists in strengthening the turf by eliminating competition
from the weeds for water and nutrients supplied to the turf . Addition-
ally the quality of the turf is greatly improved by these periodic weed
treatments .
The summer renovation work for the 49er practice field was initiated
in July . This work is necessary to strengthen the turf as much as
possible prior to the heavy practice sessions by the 49ers in the fall
and winter months . Aerification , topdressing , and fertilization together
with some resodding was accomplished .
The athletic field maintenance crews were exceptionally busy during
the month of August as a result of three softball tournaments which
were held together with the State Championship Tournament held July
24th and 25th . Little League Playoffs and the Little League City
Tournament Championship Game at Hawes Park required a special atten -
tion from this crew .
The ninety to one hundred degree temperature experienced on occasions
during the month of July required special attention be given to turf
areas which were under heavy use during this time . This was partic-
ularly true at the Fair Oaks Community Center during the Multi -Cultural
Festival which required a significant reduction in the watering schedule
so as to assure that the grounds were dry enough to be used by the fes -
tival activities . This area together with a few others which were nearly
lost due to extreme use , high temperature and lack of water are now being
restored .
Park Division personnel were called upon to assist in the annual Fourth
of July activities and together with the boat races during the same
period . This involves the distribution of bleachers , tables , chairs ,
trash cans , and barbecue grills for these events . Also , the division
personnel assisted with the Celebrity Baseball event .
- 10-
