I It was announced that the joint meeting of the Parks and Recreation Com- mission and the City Council is scheduled on July 26 at 4 : 00 p . m . Chairman Pound welcomed William Buckhout as a new member of the Commission . AGENDA ITEM 2 . ( Moved forward on the agenda ) Don Burtz , Recreation Supervisor , was given the courtesy of appearing first on the agenda , with his review of the Summer Recreation Program . He said this is a community leisure services program , including wilderness camp and playground activities . Approximately 8 , 000 participants city wide will be served this year as compared to about 6 , 000 last year . A new training pro- gram was initiated this year in an attempt to adequately prepare staff for their summer work . The results have been encouraging . On Monday , Tuesday , and Wednesday , there is a Tiny Tot program ( 3 -6 years ) at all of the parks which lasts for about one and a half hours . It has been quite successful and will be increased . Mr . Burtz has invited the 4- H Clubs to bring some animals to the parks during an animal or pet week and talk to the children about 4-H work and raising animals . This was a very popular activity with the children and also many adults . The children also learn tumbling in the Tiny Tot program . The East Side recreation program is federally funded and administered by E . O . C . of San Mateo County . Our Department has assisted them with their in- service training and has publicized their activities . A Day Camp pro- gram provides for children from 3 to 6 in addition to Junior and Senior Camps . The Wilderness Camp is now in its fourth year . It has been operating in conjunction with the schools , as an extension of the school program . Last year , 170 students attended and to date this year there have been 185 in attendance and there are still several weeks remaining . The Red Morton Center has provided the main emphasis for the teenagers . A fine job is being done in this area and the staff has enlisted the aid of a good number of volunteers . It was pointed out that Recreation Center Supervisor Priscilla Mosher had been appointed to the school board . Chair- man Pound expressed the Commission ' s congratulations to her . There are approximately 62 Senior organizations in San Mateo County . Mary Kucala is the advisor for the Senior program in the Veterans Memorial Build- ing . A meeting has been called on August 4 of the leaders of the various Senior groups in San Mateo County to initiate plans for coordinating their efforts . -2-
