I <br /> It was announced that the joint meeting of the Parks and Recreation Com- <br /> mission and the City Council is scheduled on July 26 at 4 : 00 p . m . <br /> Chairman Pound welcomed William Buckhout as a new member of the Commission . <br /> AGENDA ITEM 2 . ( Moved forward on the agenda ) <br /> Don Burtz , Recreation Supervisor , was given the courtesy of appearing first <br /> on the agenda , with his review of the Summer Recreation Program . He said <br /> this is a community leisure services program , including wilderness camp and <br /> playground activities . Approximately 8 , 000 participants city wide will be <br /> served this year as compared to about 6 , 000 last year . A new training pro- <br /> gram was initiated this year in an attempt to adequately prepare staff for <br /> their summer work . The results have been encouraging . <br /> On Monday , Tuesday , and Wednesday , there is a Tiny Tot program ( 3 -6 years ) <br /> at all of the parks which lasts for about one and a half hours . It has <br /> been quite successful and will be increased . Mr . Burtz has invited the <br /> 4- H Clubs to bring some animals to the parks during an animal or pet week <br /> and talk to the children about 4-H work and raising animals . This was a <br /> very popular activity with the children and also many adults . The children <br /> also learn tumbling in the Tiny Tot program . <br /> The East Side recreation program is federally funded and administered by <br /> E . O . C . of San Mateo County . Our Department has assisted them with their <br /> in- service training and has publicized their activities . A Day Camp pro- <br /> gram provides for children from 3 to 6 in addition to Junior and Senior <br /> Camps . <br /> The Wilderness Camp is now in its fourth year . It has been operating in <br /> conjunction with the schools , as an extension of the school program . Last <br /> year , 170 students attended and to date this year there have been 185 in <br /> attendance and there are still several weeks remaining . <br /> The Red Morton Center has provided the main emphasis for the teenagers . A <br /> fine job is being done in this area and the staff has enlisted the aid of <br /> a good number of volunteers . It was pointed out that Recreation Center <br /> Supervisor Priscilla Mosher had been appointed to the school board . Chair- <br /> man Pound expressed the Commission ' s congratulations to her . <br /> There are approximately 62 Senior organizations in San Mateo County . Mary <br /> Kucala is the advisor for the Senior program in the Veterans Memorial Build- <br /> ing . A meeting has been called on August 4 of the leaders of the various <br /> Senior groups in San Mateo County to initiate plans for coordinating their <br /> efforts . <br /> -2- <br />
