TO : Parks & Recreation Commission
FROM : Redwood Shores Committee , Chairman Pound
DATE : July 29 , 1976
SUBJECT : REVIEW OF BELMONT SCHOOL SITE TURF AREA
The Redwood Shores Committee met on July 29 , 1976 . Those present were
Commissioners Pound , and Buckhout and Commissioner Weintraub was absent .
The Committee met at the school site at 7 : 30 p . m . together with several
of the homeowners that live adjacent to the new turf area and softball
diamond recently completed on the site . The staff prepared a notice
of the meeting which was distributed to the adjacent homeowners which
requested their attendance at the meeting . There were seven out of the
ten homeowners in attendance .
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss the potential problems
which the adjacent homeowners might experience as a result of the instal -
lation of the turf area and ball diamond . Reference was made to earlier
meetings which were held with the Redwood Shores residents and adjacent
homeowners when the project was in the planning stage . It was pointed
out that now that the project was completed , the problems can be more
easily recognized . The staff pointed out the potential for balls to
be hit over the fence which could cause some problem to the adjacent
owners . It was further pointed out that the placement of the back -
stop and homeplate were designed in such a way that this problem could
be greatly reduced . The group also discussed the pros and cons of
having baseline fences some 15 to 20 feet high which could possibly
also reduce the potential , however , the aesthetics of the area insofar
as the backyards of the homeowners were concerned would be significantly
violated . After a considerable discussion , it was the consensus of the
group that a small extension to the present backstop together with the
interplanting of trees and shrubs along the fence boundary would be far
more acceptable than base line fences . They agreed that this would
eventually curtail most of the balls that might go over the fences and
that it would be best to experience the use of the area for some time
in order to better define the problem than to install the fences at this
time .
The staff and the Committee agreed with the group and indicated that
this plan would be implemented as soon as the schedules could be accomo -
dated .
- 5 -
