TO : Parks and Recreation Commission
FROM : Design and Development Committee , Chairman Weintraub
DATE : October 8 , 1976
SUBJECT : REVIEW THE SCOPE OF WORK FOR FIRST PHASE DEVELOPMENT - -
CANYON PARK
The Design and Development Committee met October 8 , 1976 . Those present
were Commissioners Weintraub , Schlesinger and Knecht together with the
staff and the landscape architectural consultants , Singer and Hodges .
The meeting was called to review the proposed development for Phase I
of Canyon Park . Mr . Singer displayed a preliminary plan for the proposed
first phase and explained the elements of the plan to the Committee and
the staff .
It was proposed that the first phase of development for Canyon Park
would include the site preparation and clearing , , the basic grading for
the entire site , initial drainage for the first phase , irrigation and
turfing of the site , initial walkways throughout the park , a small park-
ing area , and the basic trees and shrubs for the key areas of the park .
In addition , several alternates were discussed which could be prepared
for the first phase and included depending upon the total funds to be
available and the bids which were received for the work ; such alterna-
tives are : sanitary sewer hookups , picnic sites , rustic adventure play
structures , additional ground cover and irrigation , as well as additional
tree and shrub planting .
It was the feeling of the Committee that if at all possible , the play
apparatus area should be included into the first phase . Temporary park-
ing could be provided , pending the future phases of development , which
could include permanent parking in concert with the small neighborhood
recreation center which is planned for the long range development of the
park . It was pointed out that perhaps other funds may become available
to the City from new state grants which possibly could be directed to
Canyon Park and , therefore , make it possible to include several of the
alternates . These possibilities are being studied further and the Com-
mission will be establishing these priorities soon .
The Committee agreed that the consultants should proceed with the ele-
ments in the first phase as discussed . Additional meetings will be held
to review the progress of the plans when appropriate to do so .
- 7 -
