TO : Parks & Recreation Commission
FROM : Open Space Committee , Chairman Weintraub
DATE : October 26 , 1976
SUBJECT : REVIEW OF POSSIBLE FUNDING FROM STATE AND FEDERAL SOURCES
The Open Space Committee met October 26 , 1976 . Those present were Com-
missioners Pound and Weintraub . Commissioner Rollins was absent .
The Open Space Committee was requested to review the latest possible
sources of funding from the state and federal government and ascertain
the availability of these funds for current park expansion and develop-
ment needs . The staff has been reviewing with the Commission for the
past several months the status of various bills which would provide
additional funding if passed . It was pointed out to the Committee that
there are three main areas of possible funding which could apply to the
park and recreation development in Redwood City . These sources were
reviewed with the Committee as follows :
1 . The funds allocated to Redwood City , as a result of the State
Park Bond Issue of 1974 , are still available and approximate
$204 , 600 . These funds were initially earmarked for the pur-
chase of a neighborhood park in the Middlefield Neighborhood
area . The deadline for the use of these funds was 1979 .
It was pointed out that resultant from the public discussions
from the various task forces , which were supplying input into
the Community Development Program , the purchase of property
in the Middlefield Neighborhood for park purposes did not
receive a high priority rating . The relocation of people ,
the necessity of acquiring homes , and the critical need for
housing in the area has apparently taken priority over pro-
viding park lands in the neighborhood . This also seems to
be the feeling during discussions of the general plan prepar-
ation . These facts , together with the lack of funds on the
park of the City to match the State Park Bond Funds which
would be necessary to purchase the property and relocate the
people in the neighborhood , indicate that perhaps these funds
should be re- allocated and prioritized for a different use .
During the Committee ' s discussion of this source of funding ,
it was concluded that an effort should be made to receive
further input from the neighborhood , concerning the status
of the neighborhood park prior to arriving at any recommen-
dations . This course of action will be pursued .
-8 -
