Civic Cultural Commission -2 - November 20 , 1975
The Chd i rman suggested that 1 he Commission point out two fundamental issues
to the California Arts Council . These issues would be the establishing of
a dialog and communications with local entities directly with the California
Arts Council and that the California Arts Council be made aware of the con-
tinuing lack of emphasis being given the arts by the schools throughout the
state . It was the consensus of the Commission that these matters should be
pointed out to the California Arts Council and that a letter will be prepared
in this regard .
AGENDA ITEM 3 - Landmarks Element of the General Plan
The Commission discussed the Landmarks Element of the General Plan as
currently being drafted by the Planning Commission . The Commission agreed
that the draft was well done and covered the various points which the Com-
mission had previously discussed relative to historical landmarks and the
community ' s growing awareness to preserve Redwood City ' s rich heritage .
The Commission discussed the goals , objectives , and principles of the study
together with the standards and the proposals being offered in the report .
Upon completion of their discussion , the following suggestions were made :
1 . it is suggested that a map be prepared to accompany the report which
will more clearly designate the various landmark districts which are
set forth in the plan . Additionally , the inventory of potential land -
mark sites could be designated upon the map , which would make the report
more understandable .
2 . The Commission recognizes that the report is still in draft form ; however ,
they found some repetition throughout the report and would suggest that
final editing reduce the repetition as much as possible .
3 . Upon discussing the proposals in section 5 , it was pointed out that
proposal 4C , which indicates the Civic Cultural Commission ' s role in
the Landmark process , was meant to imply that the Commission ' s role
would be one of review and assistance with input into the total pro-
gram . The proposal as stated implies that the Cultural Commission
would assume a role of an operating regulatory body rather then a
review and advisory body . The Commission felt that this distinction
should be more clearly set forth in the future drafts of the plan .
4 . Upon considering the implementation schedule , the Commisssion suggests
that the Fox Theater-Civic Theater item be placed as number one for
1977-78 in the site and district development projects . It was also
suggested that the San Mateo County History and Art Museum be placed
as number seven and the Union Cemetery Historic Park be placed as
number nine in the fiscal year 1980 .
