CIVIC CULTURAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Meeting
March 4 , 1975 Page 2
Mr . Weeks then reported on the planning session which he had
attended with the San Mateo County Arts Council ( Agenda Report
Item 1 ) . He said it was a brainstorming session as to the role
the Council might play in joint projects - whether there is in-
terest throughout the County with respect to programs , possibly
pulling together two or three communities . A gentleman from
San Francisco told about their arts program and was realistic
about the scarcity of funds for cultural activities . He is one
of the advisors who sit in judgment for grants by the National
Foundation for The Arts . He told what communities must do to
qualify for funds and said there is a relatively small amount
available . It was felt that a coordinated program for the
county would have the best chance of qualifying.
Mr . Nemoyten said his role would be :
1 . Encourage the formation of new arts councils , commissions °
and committees in cities where they do not exist
2 . Establish pilot projects that encourage city arts com-
missions and cultural organizations from various
different neighboring cities to work together for
their mutual benefit
3 . Increase communication between the community colleges
and community cultural organizations so there is far
greater interchange of cultural resources
4. Organize a so -called "Multicultural Task Force " com-
posed of a racially diverse group of visual and
performing artists who move about the county community
performing , advising , teaching , and generally stimu-
lating new and vital arts and cultural activities
5 . Promoting existing arts enterprises in order to build
greater audiences and stronger arts organizations
6. Planning new arts facilities to meet the present and
future needs of the county communities .
Additional meetings , possibly quarterly , are planned for the
exchange of ideas and experience .
Mr . Weeks told Mr . Nemoyten that he felt someone from Redwood
City should be appointed to the San Mateo County Arts Council .
