M.
On motion duly made and seconded , the Minutes of the meeting of October 27 , 1971 ,
were approved as mailed .
Chairman Keckley called on Ken Schroeter to speak to the subject of housing in
the Redwood City area generally . Mr . Schroeter started by saying that it was
difficult to separate facts from philosophy when talking about housing . Some of
the points that he made were that while there is a range of housing in Redwood
City that could be classified from very bad to very good , the crux of the housing
problem was not altogether that there was very bad housing but rather that there
was such a wide disparity between the bad housing and the good housing . He felt
that the issue was a relative one rather than an absolute one and also that the
housing problem as we generally refer to it is a manifestation of more fundamental
root problems such as lack of employment opportunities and lack of a sense of
power on the part of minorities and low- income families to control their own
destinies . He concluded that while the housing problem in America over the past
several decades has defied solution , it was nevertheless encumbent upon all those
who are concerned about this kind of disparity in our society to continuously
work toward improved living conditions at all levels .
•
Mr . Yaeger , who was present , disagreed with the general slant of Mr . Schroeterts
presentation, suggesting that there was a solution and that was bringing about a
mixture of housing types for families of varying economic , racial , and ethnic
categories throughout the community.
Mr . Bradley of the County Committee for Community Development reinforced
Mr . Yaegerts comment and added that the Housing Development Corporation of
San Mateo County is presently working in this direction with the hope of achieving
some 300 such units throughout the Redwood City area .
MINUTES HOUSING CONCERNS COMMITTEE NOVEMBER 10, 1971 PAGE 1 OF 2
