395
Fire Chief - Account No. 530 (continued)
The motion carried unanimously by voice vote.
OP". City Manager Fales recommended that ownership of the
City fire boat be transferred to the Port which would
then be responsible for maintenance and replacement
costs, although City fire personnal would provide man-
power in the event of a port fire. Mr. Fales advised
that maintenance costs are $8,591 per year for the boat
which is used only by the Port and that he has discussed
the matter with the Port Manager who believes the pro-
posal is fair. Mr. Fales replied to Council questions
concerning details regarding use of the fire boat, ob-
serving that an agreement with the Port would be required.
MOTION: Councilman Henderson moved, seconded by Council-
man Leipzig, to request the City Manager to enter into
negotiations with the Port regarding possible transfer
of ownership of the fire boat from the City to the Port.
The motion carried unanimously by voice vote.
Police Boat - City Manager Fales commented concerning
the Cityrs police boat, noting that Redwood City is the
only city in the South Bay with such a boat, and although
assistance is given to other jurisdictions, they do not
contribute to the expense of operating the boat. Main-
tenance cost is $7,82 + in addition to 580 patrol hours,
all of which could be saved, if the boat were eliminated
from police use and sold.
Discussion followed and Mr. Fales replied to questions
concerning use of the police boat; need for the boat;
whether the SCSP might require such a boat; the condition
of the boat and whether it can be sold.
William Harlow criticized the boat, stating it is not
suitable for rescue work, is not being used properly,
could not be used in rough water and suggested that its
present use would more appropriately be done by commer-
cial tows.
MOTION: Councilman Henderson moved, seconded by Council-
man Barrett, to accept the recommendation of the City
Manager to eliminate the police patrol boat maintenance
costs from the 1975-1976 proposed Annual Budget subject
to investigation of any legal obligations the City may
have with regard to the boat, with the intent that the
boat be sold.
The motion carried unanimously by voice vote .
Public Works - Account No. 601 (Engineering and
b,,,, Administration) (pp 62-63)
City Manager Fales referred to the report of the Director
of Public Works of May 30, 1975 concerning services which
might possibly be cut from the department budget by re-
ducing or eliminating them, noting that the services were
-2-
Budget
Study
5/31/75
