402 <br /> MOTION: Councilman Rhodes moved, seconded by Council- <br /> , man Williams, to continue City maintenance of sidewalks <br /> as presently performed. <br /> Mayor Weymouth noted that although no motion is necessary ,,,,,m <br /> to continue present programs, perhaps the Council would <br /> like to vote on the matter. <br /> The motion carried unanimously by voice vote. <br /> It was pointed out that it is educational for citizens <br /> to realize what service items must be eliminated, if <br /> there is to be a budget cut resulting in a reduced tax <br /> rate. <br /> Cliff Baxley, 3568 Rolison Road, advised he is present <br /> with members of the newly formed Redwood City Homeowners <br /> and Taxpayers Coalition for Social Justice and advised <br /> the establishment of a resolution committee to consider <br /> matters in connection with Revenue Sharing Funds . <br /> (The Council recessed from 2:30 to 2:42 p.m. ) <br /> MOTION: Councilman Norris moved, seconded by Council- <br /> man Barrett, to approve Account No. 630 with the changes <br /> with regard to reduction of Street Sweeping. <br /> Attention was called to the section of the report of <br /> May 30, 1975 of the Director of Public Works where it <br /> is pointed out that $73,000, or about three cents on the ""m <br /> tax rate, can be saved by removal of all mid-block <br /> street lights and that street lighting is another area <br /> where the City provides greater service than is required. <br /> In response to question, City Manager Fales advised that <br /> it is not unlikely that the City will at some time be <br /> required to reduce energy use. <br /> AMENDMENT TO MOTION: Councilman Henderson moved that <br /> Account No. 630 be approved with the changes with regard <br /> to reduction of Street Sweeping and that mid-block street <br /> lights be eliminated at a saving of $73,000. <br /> The amendment to the motion failed for lack of a second. <br /> Ken Aldrich (see above) stated he agreed with Councilman <br /> Henderson and asked about the cost of seal coating streets . <br /> Mr. Pusich advised that seal coating is a less expensive <br /> means than the use of asphalt to reduce costs of street <br /> maintenance and is quite effective . <br /> Mrs. Wymer (see above) inquired about the number of new <br /> street lights on Broadway and the use made of the old <br /> ones . Mr. Fales explained that the new street lights <br /> are spaced so that there will be adequate light when the <br /> new trees are planted on Broadway, observing that there <br /> have not been trees there in the past.
