10
Parks and Recreation (continued)
Senior Citizen Support
City Manager Fales summarized the senior citizen
program noting that the Parks and Recreation De-
partment
co-sponsors programs with the Fun After
Fifty Club by providing free use of the Veterans
Memorial Building and about 20% of a center super-
visor' s time for assistance .
Ron Soucy suggested the City' s contribution to
senior activities should be increased . It was
explained that programs are prepared and submitted
and, if approved, are funded, but that funds are
not simply made available and programs developed
to use them.
In response to question, Mr. Fales described the
study being conducted by the Park and Recreation
Commission and staff with a senior citizens com-
mittee which will result in a proposal for a
senior citizens center and an expanded program.
M. L. Tepley (see above) suggested that senior
citizens already get certain tax breaks . It was
explained that depending upon circumstances, some
senior citizens get tax relief from the State, but
there are no City advantages. Mr. Fales advised
that an assistance schedule for senior citizens
is available at the County Assessor' s office.
MOTION : Councilman Rhodes moved that the Disabled
American Veterans, Redwood City Chapter No. 136,
Inc . be allowed to meet in the Veterans Memorial
Building four times a year without charge .
Mayor Weymouth pointed out that the subject of the
motion should be taken up at a Council meeting, and
it is not appropriate for discussion at this time .
Mayor Weymouth suggested the request is reasonable,
and advised it would require an amendment to the
fee schedule, since many DAV members do not live
in the City, and that the matter should be referred
to the Park and Recreation Commission who would
then make recommendation to Council in accord with
usual procedure .
The motion died for lack of a second.
City Manager Fales stated he would refer the sub-
ject of the motion to the Park and Recreation Com-
mission, advising them the matter had come up at
the Budget Session. Councilman Rhodes requested
notification when the Park and Recreation Commission
would consider the matter.
MOTION: Councilman Henderson moved, seconded by Council-
man Williams, to approve all of the Parks and Recreation
budget as amended today.
-10-
Budget
Study
6/7/75
