Mr. <br /> Fales explained that there is considerable broad-based <br /> support for softball, and the City maintains many heavily- <br /> used facilities for both softball and baseball which <br /> altogether costs far more than the support given to <br /> tennis. Mr. Fales explained further that the team fees <br /> were all that were to be increased . He and Director of <br /> Parks and Recreation Weeks advised that meetings will be <br /> held with adult team managers to determine if costs can <br /> be cut by eliminating some services and developing op- <br /> tions to reduce the cost . <br /> Pete Uccelli (see above) advised that he sponsors four <br /> sports teams and urged that the City find a way to keep <br /> teams and minimize cost. <br /> Verne Brown, 438 Vera , asked about the budget cuts in- <br /> volving fees for adult sports. Mayor Weymouth reiterated <br /> that meetings will be held with team managers and sponsors <br /> to develop options with regard to cutting costs. <br /> Sal Pantano, 1514 Escondido Way, Belmont, requested con- <br /> sideration of reduction of the property tax rate and <br /> presented petitions containing about 2500 names, mostly <br /> of Redwood City residents, who join him in that request. <br /> Mayor Weymouth advised that the four days of Budget Study <br /> Sessions have resulted in a reduction of the tax rate of <br /> approximately 18. 1¢ per $100 of assessed valuation which <br /> would seem to be very responsive to the petition. It was <br /> pointed out that all properties in the City were not re- <br /> assessed, but primarily only single-family homes, and <br /> for that reason, the City ' s revenue from property tax <br /> will be substantially less than the percentage of in- <br /> creased assessment on single-family homes. <br /> Discussion followed concerning the number of items which <br /> must be included in the City budget as a result of state <br /> and federal requirements; the fact that the City faces <br /> greatly inflated costs in many essential items; the item <br /> by item examination given to the Budget by the Council <br /> in attempting to cut costs wherever possible ; and the <br /> desirability of federal and state tax reform. <br /> In response to Council question, Mr. Pantano agreed to <br /> join with Council in urging the Legislature to take action <br /> with regard to tax reform by mailing copies of his petition <br /> to local legislators <br /> Marcella Garcia, 198 Dumbarton, PROBE bilingual secretary, <br /> described her heavy workload and urged Council to allo- <br /> cate Revenue Sharing funds to PROBE which would permit <br /> the hiring of additional secretarial help and result in <br /> a more effective operation. <br /> Dolores Lara suggested that Latin Americans have a pro- <br /> prietary attitude about the Fair Oaks Community Center <br /> and that black and white Americans are not permitted <br /> equal use of the facility or equal opportunity in employ- <br /> ment there .
