13`3'
/3-
Leahy Street, but that it is not being used properly.
Mr. Gourley suggested that residents and some of their'
guests park in the street rather than in garages or on
the aprons of garages.
The resolution was adopted unanimously by roll call vote.
Park and Recreation Commission -
Senior Center Study Report
City Manager Fales referred to his report of September 5,
1975 attaching report of the Parks and Recreation
Director, dated August 11, and calling attention to the
Senior Center Study forwarded to Council on August 29.
Discussion followed and Mr. Fales and Parks and Recrea-
tion Director Weeks commented and replied to questions
concerning consideration given to a potential site for
the Center downtown in conjunction with the proposed
civic center or redevelopment area ; the fact that the
City owns Red Morton Community Park which has adequate
land space for such a Center, obviating the need to
purchase land; the desirability of locating the Center
near other recreation facilities, the fact that most of
those using the proposed Center reside east of El Camino
Real and access to the Community Park is easy for those
who walk or use public transportation; the expectation
that residential development will take place downtown
which should appeal to senior citizens because of adja-
cent shopping facilities ; the fact that funding for the
Center might be more readily available if it is included
in redevelopment of the downtown area rather than else-
where; and the desirability of considering not only the
cost of the Center and its benefits to senior citizens,
but the potential benefits which the Center might cause
to accrue to the , entire City.
William E. Morrissey, 119 Jeter Street, member of the
Senior Center Study Committee, observed that most of the
approximately 7,300 persons over 60 years of age in the
City live west of El Camino, between Roosevelt and
Whipple . Mr. Morrissey suggested that if the Senior
Center is located at the Community Center, it would be
most readily accessible to the greatest number of pro-
spective users, and land acquision would not be required .
Cliff Miller, 1095 Eden Bower Lane, member of the Senior
Center Study Committee, suggested that the cost in con-
sultant fees has been saved through the volunteer efforts
of the Committee in preparing the much lauded Study, and
recommended that the proposed Center be constructed in
the Community Park. Mr. Miller thanked the City Council
for their participation in a recent program for seniors,
observing that the senors present were pleased and in-
terested to learn about government operation and of the
City' s plans and programs from Council members . Mr.
Miller urged that the necessary funds be granted to com-
mence with preliminary work relating to the proposed
Center, observing that perhaps senior citizens will be
able to assist with fund raising if it is needed later.
-3-
Reg.Mtg.
9.8/75
