437
AGENDA (continued) ACTION TAKEN (continued)
PQ"' PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued) PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued)
1- 2 (continued) increase the development possibilities of the
land, noting there is market demand for office,
hotel, commercial and residential uses which
would be beneficial to the community.
Dave Wheelwright, 749 Barnegat, stated he is in
favor of the proposed development. Mr.
Wheelwright advised he is a tenant of Peninsula
Marina whose location he selected for his
memory training seminars because of the tran-
quillity offered by the water site.
Robert J. Costello, attorney representing
Granite Rock Company, distributed copies of his
letter of January 12, 1981 to the City Council
and introduced the president of the Company.
Mr. Costello noted his letter of November 18,
1980 is a part of the Planning Commission
record.
Bruce Woolpert, President, Granite Rock Com-
pany, made a slide presentation showing the
industries presently located at the Port and
the view of them which prospective homeowners
in the Piombo development would have. Mr.
Woolpert then distributed copies of his letter
of January 12, 1981 addressed to the City
Council and read it.
In response to questions, Mr. Woolpert said
that the channel between his industry and the
.1011•0, subject site appears to be about as wide as
Bayshore Freeway and is heavily used for barge
traffic transporting sand, gravel, asphalt,
haw etc. He observed that such a barge facility is
unique and very desirable for Port industry
because of reduced fuel costs and traffic
associated with trucks and rail.
Mr. Costello referred to his letter distri-
buted earlier and read it. Mr. Costello
added that he objects to the findings of the
Planning Commission in approving the appli-
cation, suggesting the findings are not sup-
ported by evidence. He stated that the
responsibilities of homeowners with regard to
dredging, sewage capacity and parking cannot
be dismissed as technicalities and noted that
the Planning staff recommended against approval.
Carol Anderson, H-29 Koshland Way, Santa Cruz,
Audubon Society, commented concerning the de-
sirability of maintaining tidal marshland as
a productive wildlife area, noting there was
much opposition expressed in the Environmental
Impact Report (EIR) to the project. Ms.
Anderson also noted that the tidelands are the
home of many endangered and other species. It
was suggested that Ms. Anderson may not be
aware that the present uses of the properties
in the subject area is heavy industrial.
Pete Hughes, 285 Woodside Road, Woodside,
owner of business at 2501 Spring, stated he
0.,m, has no interest in the subject development,
but he favors approving the application be-
cause it is an attractive project.
Reg.Mtg.
1/12/81
Page 3
