Ms. Johnson stated that there have been an increasing
number of requests lately for food and housing. She advised
that the League is a member of the Main Street Committee attempting
to upgrade that area and has an annual budget of some $135,000,
mostly from United Way support.
Halfway House
No representative present. Assistant City Manager Smith advised
that whether or not the agency will continue in operation is
unknown.
R.S.V.P. (Retired Senior Volunteer Program)
Dennis La Buda, 4271 North First Street, San Jose, advised that
about one-half of the seniors who volunteer in the program live
in Redwood City and that 70% of the agency's funds come from
the federal government with the local community providing 30%.
Mr. La Buda said that through the program, seniors volunteered
some 45,000 hours to Redwood City agencies. PRI
City Manager Fales advised that he concurs in the recommendation
of the Housing and Human Concerns Committee that $4,500 be
allocated to RSVP.
Kainos Home
Dorothy Philbrick, 3800 East Lake Way, Director, advised that
the Kainos Home offers a home and training to mentally retarded
adults. Mrs. Philbrick reported that the $20,000 allocation
requested is for start-up costs, landscaping and furniture,
noting that funds for the $403,000 home were raised privately
over a six-year period, and that she receives no salary.
Mrs. Romeo Bianchi , 1250 Alden Court, Belmont, advised that all
the administration and other work at the Home is on a voluntary
basis. Mrs. Bianchi said that she and her husband do not have
anyone benefitting from the program, but that they assist in
raising funds for its operation because of the need for the
Home and their admiration for all of the participants who are
anxious to help themselves and become as independent as possible.
Terry Stoker, San Mateo, said that his adult daughter has bene-
fitted from the Kainos program and he is grateful to those who .•oi
have made such a facility available. Mr. Stoker urged approval
of the recommended allocation. •..
Lois Underwood, Harbor Village, said her daughter has bene-
fitted from the program and urged approval of the recommended
allocation.
Budget Study
6/14/80
Page 3
