260 <br /> TRANSPORTATION (continued) <br /> Attention was called to the memorandum dated June 13, 1980 <br /> from Director of Finance Ference re Correction to Parks and <br /> Recreation Budget, pg. 36, delete .2 years Casual Building <br /> Maintenance Worker I from Street Trees ($3,225) . <br /> Islands and Medians <br /> Mr. Fales described these as areas that are not parks but must <br /> must be maintained, and noted that some present an unusual <br /> problem because maintenance must be done from the travelled <br /> way. Discussion continued regarding landscaping of Veterans <br /> Boulevard south of Whipple Avenue; meetings with Southern <br /> Pacific concerning Chestnut Street; the train station; getting <br /> traffic to and from the Port; and the Dumbarton connection; <br /> and the fact that with increasing Port development, the <br /> problems of intersections and added traffic will have to be <br /> dealt with. <br /> STREET FACILITY IMPROVEMENTS <br /> City Manager Fales reviewed the objectives in this Program, <br /> adding that currently the projects are selected by Public Works <br /> on the basis of observation and experience; that conversion to <br /> the new computer equipment will provide for a program to aid <br /> the Public Works Department to determine by age and condition <br /> which projects to select. <br /> PARKING <br /> Parking Maintenance and Operation ,,,,,i <br /> Mr. Fales commented that consideration is being given to <br /> changing the parking meters, as well as meter rates; that <br /> while he was not ready to include it in this budget, he <br /> wanted Council to know it was being looked at because a <br /> good deal of money could be saved on maintenance, and com- <br /> plaints would be fewer. <br /> Mr. Fales noted that the bonds for the parking district will <br /> be paid off in 1985-86. <br /> Discussion continued regarding the parking problem, that a <br /> group comprised of County personnel , Mayor Biagi , Councilman <br /> Chandler and others has been working on the overall parking <br /> situation; that there have been discussions with developers <br /> regarding the possibility for a private-public partnership <br /> in a parking structure. Mr. Addiego noted that his depart- <br /> , ment had in the past week taken counts around the core area <br /> of downtown four times a day for a use study, and then there <br /> will be a needs study, to be put into a recommendation. <br /> ADMINISTRATION OF TRANSPORTATION <br /> Mr. Fales and Mr. Ference commented and responded to questions <br /> regarding the distribution of employee costs. In response to <br /> a comment by Council that Bair Island Road has no speed limit <br /> signs nor street lights, Mr. Addiego advised he will investigate Waal <br /> regarding the signs, and Mr. Fales noted that the street lights <br /> will be put in as part of the project. <br /> Budget Study <br /> 6/21/80 <br /> `Prage 2 <br />
