263
ENVIRONMENTAL SUPPORT AND PROTECTION (continued)
Water System Improvements
Mr. Fales advised that there still remains a number of under-
sized water lines, some being 4", whereas the standard now is
6" to 8".
WASTE WATER COLLECTION
Iowa
Mr. Fales and Mr. Ference commented generally regarding the
waste water treatment system, the ongoing maintenance of the
system to where it meets the SBSA outfall ; that the cash con-
tribution for the new plant is small this year because of what
has already been contributed, approximately $4 million to date;
that the amount shown in this budget is a one time amount, and
that Redwood City owns 45% of the plant; that this will be the
last year of making major payments for the plant which is ex-
pected to be in operation by August of 1981, after which costs
will be maintenance and operation; that a few years ago, adjust-
ments
were made in the sewer service charge so that it would
be unnecessary to increase or decrease the charge from year to
year.
Waste Water' System Maintenance and Operations
Mr. Fales reviewed the objectives and stressed the importance
of smoke testing of the lines which helps in cutting down on
treatment plant flow, since storm water is essentially clean.
Sewer Lateral Maintenance
[:: Mr. Fales noted that many of the older buildings in the City
do not have sewer cleanouts, and the plan is to locate these
so as to prevent a problem, rather than wait until it happens.
Waste Water System Improvements
WASTE WATER TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL
Mr. Fales advised that when the new plant opens the existing
City treatment plant will , in a relatively short time, wind
down and cease operation, and that industrial plants are re-
quired to pre-treat effluent on site, so the old plant will not
be needed for pre-treatment.
STORM WATER DISPOSAL
Mr. Fales referred to the severe flooding experienced by
Redwood City until in the 1960's when the people of Redwood
City approved the bond issues to correct the problem.
Waterway Maintenance and Operation
PUBLIC SAFETY (pp. 51-60)
lir LAW ENFORCEMENT
Administering Law Enforcement
Reference was made by Council to Objective No. 1 and whether
anything can be done to hurry the placement process. Mr.
Budget:Study
6 `21/80
Range 5
