(continued) use permit, and several photographs depicting
the location of the proposed business.
Lois Turner, 267 W. Oakwood, President of the
Sequoia Parent Teachers Students Association
reported that the PTSA Executive Board dis-
cussed the proposed business and believes it
is not to the advantage of the students at the
high school to have one more such business .
near the school.
Litsa Mellis, owners of Litsa's Beauty Salon, .,..,n
2732 Broadway, said she is a tenant of Mr.
Brinkat's occupying the shop next to the pro-
posed restaurant-bar. Mrs. Mellis stated
that when the subject property had the same
kind of business serving high school students
that the crowd harrassed her elderly clients,
did damage to her shop when she protested, and
created many problems for her and her custo-
mers. She opposed granting the requested use
permit. In response to questions from City
Attorney Schricker, Ms. Mellis stated that her
customers were afraid to cross the sidewalk in
front of the students because of their
language and behavior and that it had been
necessary to call the police several times.
She said she believed the proposed business
would be an economic detriment to herself and
to some other nearby businesses, suggesting
the block needs improvement.
Discussion followed and Mr. Brinkat and Mr.
Schricker commented concerning the nature of
businesses in the neighborhood; the fact that
many of those signing the petition do not live
in the City; the fact that some of them oper-
ate businesses now which do not compliment the
area; the fact that there are bars in the
area; and the fact that the appellant states
he is interested primarily in adult evening
trade. wig
Rosemary Fisher, owner of London Boutique,
2734 Broadway, stated her concern that the
same kind of problems which existed previously
at the subject location will reoccur. Mrs.
Fisher commented concerning the behavior of
students on the sidewalk, the refuse and
general litter they created in the block,
their harrassment of pedestrians; and the
generally economically detrimental nature of
the business.
Mark Carrino, 1875 Willow, Hillsborough,
prospective proprietor of the subject business,
described the layout of the interior of the
building, stating that student loitering will
be discouraged. Mr. Carrino offered to make
any changes necessary to obtain approval of
the restaurant-bar. Mr. Schricker pointed out
that Council must consider the application
before them at this time.
Reg.Mtg.
2/4/80
Page 2
mai
