7.1.D. - Page 17
county of—204,000 residents23. This number does not account for faculty, professional
researchers and administration staff, many of which also reside in the county.
The city of Davis, in which the University is located, is one of the two jurisdictions in
which this study was conducted. When comparing the demographics for Davis to those
of the State, and Yolo as a whole, it becomes clear that this University town of 65,993
residents is not representative of other areas in California. Its population is largely white
(64.9% versus 57.6%) and Asian (21.9% versus 13%)) and there are many fewer Blacks
(2.3% versus 6.2%) and Latinos present than elsewhere in the State (12.5% versus
37.6%). The number of those with high school degrees is 96.3% versus 80.8% statewide,
and staggering 69.3% versus 30.2% hold bachelor's degrees or higher.24 Davis has a
lower rate of Home ownership with 44.6% versus 56.7% for the state, likely due to its
student population.
The second jurisdiction in this study, the City of West Sacramento, does not differ as
dramatically from the rest of California as does Davis. Of its total population of 49,523
persons, 60% are White, 10.5% Asian, 4.8% are Black and 31.4% are Latino. The High
school graduation percentages are at about the State average with 80.7% versus 80.8%
but the numbers of those holding Bachelor's degrees or higher are much lower with
24.9% versus 30.2%. The home ownership rate for West Sacramento exceeds that for the
State by 2.5% with 59.2% versus 56.7% overal1.25
23 http://www.ucdavis.edu/about/facts/index.html
24 http://quickfacts.census.gov/gfd/states/06/0618100.html
25 http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/06/0684816.html
11
