1 Winslow Street Development, Redwood City 8.A. - Page 209 <br /> 7. "Chemical or physical treatments, if appropriate, will be undertaken using the gentlest means <br /> possible. Treatments that cause damage to historic materials will not be used." <br /> Analysis: No chemical treatments are shown as proposed in this project at this time. Because of <br /> the good condition of the dressing -room wing, it is not likely that strong treatments will be <br /> requested at a later time. To reinforce this approach, General Note 2 on Sheet A17 clearly <br /> restates this Standard, "Chemical or physical treatments, if appropriate, will be undertaken using <br /> the gentlest means possible. Treatments that cause damage to historic materials will not be <br /> used." <br /> 8. "Archeological resources will be protected and preserved in place. If such resources must be <br /> disturbed, mitigation measures will be undertaken." <br /> Analysis: Archeological resources are not evaluated in this report. No resources have been <br /> identified. <br /> 9. "New additions, exterior alterations or related new construction will not destroy historic <br /> materials, features, and spatial relationships that characterize the property. The new work shall <br /> be differentiated from the old and will be compatible with the historic materials, features, size, <br /> scale and proportion, and massing to protect the integrity of the property and its environment." <br /> Analysis: Although there are no new additions planned, the proposed project will alter original <br /> fabric and require one or two new features and elements. These alterations must be <br /> differentiated from the original materials and features for future understanding of the evolution <br /> of the building, and the alterations must also compatible with the historic fabric in scale, <br /> materials, and detailing. <br /> The proposed new construction will be utilitarian in design and materials; thus, its essence will <br /> be compatible with the feeling and associations of the original dressing -room wing and rear of <br /> the stage area because of the historic utilitarian nature of this wing of the theater. The proposed <br /> new end wall will be concrete with horizontal scale and texture, but will be differentiated from <br /> the formed original concrete wall by its masonry block construction. The new rear loading -dock <br /> door will be a modern roll -up door, in scale because of the connected segments, and compatible <br /> in utilitarian materials and painted surface. The new exterior door has not been specified for this <br /> review, but it is shown in the drawing as a simple utilitarian element, in keeping with the historic <br /> rear wing of the building. <br /> 10. "New additions and adjacent or related new construction will be undertaken in such a manner <br /> that, if removed in the future, the essential form and integrity of the historic property and its <br /> environment would be unimpaired." <br /> Analysis: The essential form and integrity of the historic property would be maintained in this <br /> project as the small rear wing could easily be restored using physical and written <br /> documentation. <br /> ARCHIVES & ARCHITECTURE <br />
