`• 8.A. - Page 210 ?nt, Redwood City 27 1
Integrity: The integrity of the historic property will be maintained in this project, as per the National
Register's seven aspects of integrity. The location would be maintained. The open setting now extant at
the rear of the building will be altered by the construction of the new development immediately to the
south, but the intent of the historic design of the rear of the building was clearly to provide a utilitarian
service area at the center of a downtown block. The proposed setting, therefore, is compatible with the
historic intent of alleyways and utilitarian planning objectives. The significant design of the building is
preserved intact at the front and side facades, and the supporting design remains subordinate to the
main elevations. The integrity of ample amounts of character - defining materials and workmanship are
preserved in this project, including board - formed concrete walls, historic dressing -room doors, original
light fixtures, and other repetitive utilitarian elements, as well as all of the historically significant front
portions of the theater. The integrity of the overall feeling of the building remains intact, as the front of
the theater is preserved without new alterations, and the feeling of the altered rear evokes the support
services that will continue to be housed there. Finally, the integrity of the associations of the theater will
be preserved, with the preservation of the character - defining features and adequate historic fabric to
convey the theatrical use of the Fox Theater over the decades.
Conclusion: The proposed design is compatible with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for
Rehabilitation.
ANALYSIS OF DTPP - REVIEW OF ADDITIONS OR MODIFICATIONS TO
HISTORIC RESOURCES
The proposed Fox Theater Dressing -room Wing Rehabilitation project must be evaluated for compliance
with the Additions or Modifications to Historic Resources (AMHR) regulations. The proposed new
building will include the reconfiguration of the parcels and /or easements associated with the Fox
Theater, so full evaluation of the Fox Theater AMHR regulations with regard specifically to the new
construction is provided as follows:
Redwood City DTPP Standard 2.1.3 G.1.c: Redwood City Standards and Guidelines for the Fox Theater
1. Standards
a. The entire interior and the historic Broadway facade, with the exception of non - historic
storefront elements, must be retained and shall not be modified in any significant way.
Analysis: The entire interior of the Fox Theater, along with 100% of the identified historic facade
are retained in all significant ways. The portion of the historic resource proposed for removal is
not an identified character - defining feature, contains some historic elements that are shown as
being preserved, and is a portion of the building that needs to be modernized for the building's
continued ability to house its original use. Modern theaters require modern services, and the
rehabilitation standards address this concept by allowing modifications that are in keeping with
the historic use and by preserving the character - defining features of the resource. The significant
interior and exterior features of the Fox Theater are shown as being preserved in their entirety,
including all the main (street) facades, the lobby, house, stage, and a usable portion of the
dressing -room wing.
ARCHIVES & ARCHITECTURE
