assessment district as proposed by Redwood City.....EA is already committed to
participate in the GID that exists to fund infrastructure improvements in Redwood
Shores. We will do all we can to support these efforts. (We hope) you will want to
welcome us almost as much as we want to be a part of your City."
John Kricken, partner at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, Architects, 33 Bush Street,
San Francisco, presented overheads of the project and project site, and briefly
described the principles that undergird the Master Plan. Mr. Kricken said the existing
zoning would allow 9 separate unrelated buildings, 890,000 square feet of space, and
some of the buildings could be only 60 feet from residential property. Mr. Kricken
said the EA Master Plan sought to correct the problems of the existing zoning and
"build a comprehensively planned campus." The Master Plan includes 6 office
buildings, 5 of them arranged around a central quadrangle, an open space similar to the
quad in Stanford, which would be the heart of the campus. Mr. Kricken said the taller
buildings would be located as far back as possible from the residential property, a
distance of just shy of 2 football fields, and because of the curve in Redwood Shores
Parkway, that taller building would be "pushed down" so that it does not dominate
westward views. Mr. Kricken described the architecture and location adding "the
visual privacy, noise and shadow impacts are all minimized with that distance from the
residential (area.)."
Mr. Kricken discussed the three separate garages tucked away from view as much as
possible, and buffered by other buildings and landscaping. Mr. Kricken said the
heights of the buildings would be varied from 5 to 10 stories to create visual interest.
He showed an overhead of the buildings on the Oracle campus (122 feet to a height of
222 feet.) Mr. Kricken pointed out the lower heights of the EA buildings and said
"there is no way....(the tallest EA building) can be seen as something Iooming....and
not compatible with its surroundings. It is just not that great a juxtaposition in height
from the other buildings in that neighborhood."
Mr. Kricken showed a mode! of the proposed project and pointed out several
architectural features, including balconies. He advised that there are many public
easements, public sidewalks, throughout the campus from one end to the other that will
allow everyone to walk through the entire campus and enjoy the facilities. He
described the construction phases, and how the architecture allows for a much more
intimate feeling. He said this project would raise the standards of development in the
whole region. Mr. Kricken said the project and Master Plan had been unanimously
approved by the Redwood Shores Business Center Design Review Board, and also the
Architecture Advisory Committee of the City.
Mayor Hartnett reported that the Council had received a substantial amount of
correspondence, including probably all of what the Planning Commission had
received.
