(� �. �- , i g <br /> EI Centro de Libertad/The Freedom Center — SMART (Students Makinq a <br /> Responsible Transition) <br /> The Freedom Center was founded to `share the gift of recovery' from substance <br /> abuse with low and moderate income San Mateo County residents by providing <br /> outpatient recovery programs, prevention education for high-risk adolescents, <br /> anger management groups, and groups for (domestic violence) batterers. EI <br /> Centro's S.M.A.R.T. (Students Making a Responsible Transition) program is an <br /> in-school prevention education program offered to youth attending either the <br /> County's court and community schools or alternative programs for high-risk <br /> youth. $7, 500 was requested to support the S. M.A. R. T. program. <br /> Teen Preqnancv Coalition of San Mateo Countv - Teen Talk and Plain Talk for <br /> Parents <br /> Teen Pregnancy Coalition provides educational programs for youth and adutts on <br /> teen pregnancy prevention. The program is committed to helping improve <br /> positive and honest communication between adults and youth, encouraging <br /> youth to make healthy choices, to reduce teen pregnancy and STD/HIV in the <br /> community. The Coalition provides "Teen Talk" for youth. "Plain Talk" for <br /> parents, and "Advocating Sexuality Education Together (ASsET) that supports <br /> teens in becoming powerful advocates for policies requiring comprehensive <br /> sexuality education in their schools. $20.000 was requested to provide "Teen <br /> Talk" and "Plain Talk" to Redwood City Middle School and High School students <br /> and their parents at five school sites. <br /> OTHER SUPPORTIVE SERVICES <br /> Samaritan House - Redwood Free Clinic <br /> Founded in 1974, Samaritan House is a community-based nonprofit organization <br /> with more than 30 years of experience in meeting the needs of low-income <br /> residents of San Mateo County. In May 2001, Samaritan House opened the Free <br /> Clinic of Redwood City to provide free healthcare services to low-income <br /> individuals and families, who do not receive medical insurance through their low- <br /> wage jobs, cannot afford "out of pocket" healthcare expenses and have no other <br /> access to healthcare services. $20,000 was requested to support this program. <br /> International Institute of SF — San Mateo Countv Immiqration Citizenship and <br /> Communitv Education Proqram <br /> The Internationat Institute is one of two non-profit agencies located in San Mateo <br /> County to provide assistance with a full range of immigration legal services <br /> leading toward family reunification and United States citizenship (the other is on <br /> the Coastside). The services include drop-in consultation services during which <br /> residents of Redwood City and the surrounding areas receive comprehensive <br /> 6 <br />
