trust that sometime you can understand what this means, that we now have a chance to
get some stability back, we have a chance to get rid of the fear, and get the neighborhood
back to what it could be. It means a great deal to have some relative peace and quiet. I
hope you can all understand that, and I offer my thanks to the Police Department."
Councilwoman Buchan asked the City Clerk to send a copy of her remarks to the Police
Department. (205)
MEMO 9/17/96
B. Councilwoman La Berge described her recent vacation in Europe and her efforts in
enlisting the City of Venice to become a Sister City of Redwood City. She described the
international status of Venice and her visits to other cities and ports in the Region of
Veneto. She advised she would make a full report to Redwood City International, the
sister city organization.
Councilwoman La Berge also advised she had taken lots of photos of beautiful sidewalk
designs in Europe and would be happy to share them with the Council Streets
Committee. (205)
MEMO 9/17/96
C. Vice Mayor Howard announced two exciting upcoming Redwood City events: The
Climate Best Fest, September 21 and 22 in Downtown Redwood City; and the Coastal
Clean-up Program on September 20, in which she and a host of volunteers would be
cleaning up the sluice next to Carl's Jr. at noon. Vice Mayor Howard urged everyone to
attend both events.
D. Mayor Hartnett thanked Mr. Bautista for his "gracious and overly generous comments"
made earlier in the evening. Mayor Hartnett said there had been an agreement reached in
principle between the Port and Pacific Shores developers in connection with the land
exchange between them which was one of the conditions for the project going forward.
Mayor Hartnett described the cooperative spirit that existed during mediation and said he
was "greatly satisfied and pleased with the efforts of the teams from each of the parties."
He said in the long term the agreement would be good for the entire City. Mayor
Hartnett said the actual agreement had yet to be finalized, but was in the process of being
memorialized. He said the agreement needed to be approved by the Port Commissioners
and once that was done and the actual land swap took place, the project would come
before the Council. Then the City would be in a position to enter into serious discussions
with the Pacific Shores developers. Mayor Hartnett said "it is an interesting
development, but we have a long road to go."
E. Councilman Leipzig suggested cancellation of the Council meeting of October 14, 1996
due to the absence of significant items for Council consideration, and other events
scheduled for that evening, including the annual convention of the League of California
Cities in Anaheim and the 4ger versus Green Bay football game. Mayor Hartnett added
that the Chamber of Commerce annual golf tournament and fund raiser for Kainos was
also scheduled for that day and evening.
REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUT E BOOK NO. 54 SEPTEMBER 16, 1996
MINUTES Paqe No. 475 PAGE 10
